Obituary It is with deepest regret that we announce the passing of our father, international musician and composer, Abel Urbina Martinez. Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in St. Albert AB Canada on March 2nd, 2016 at Sturgeon Community Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Emma; sons, Abel (Susanne nee Rivet) and Martin (Wanda nee Ellis); and daughter, Emma (Brent) Fleck. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Bradley Urbina, Paul Fleck, Brian Fleck, Andrea Urbina, Kyle Fleck and Nicole Urbina. Abel was born in Mexico City on July 22, 1928. Son of Juventina Martinez and Guadalupe Urbina. At age 6 he started with piano lessons and soon found that his passion could be his lifelong vocation. As a teen, he had the opportunity to play for Mexican and international celebrities such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, Lena Horne, Vicky Carr. In his prime he became the musical director for the variety show Siempre en Domingo (Mexican equivalent of the “Tonight Show”). His original compositions are still popular in Mexico as his music will live on. Having emigrated to Calgary in 1972, Abel played in a number of Calgary clubs and restaurants, eventually settling into his role of musical director of the Trader’s Dining Lounge in the Four Season’s Hotel which spanned from inauguration to it’s change of ownership. He then moved on to playing in the mountains in such venues as the Banff Springs Hotel, Chateau Lake Louise and the Post Hotel. He had fond memories of working with prominent Alberta based musicians such as Louis Trono, Tommy Banks, Eric Friedenberg. In his retirement years, Abel remained an active member of the community by playing in St. Albert and Edmonton. He will be remembered for his lifelong love of learning, love for teaching and friendly demeanor. A visitation for family and friends will take place on Sunday, March 13, 2016 from 2:00 – 4:00pm at the Connelly-McKinley St. Albert Chapel, 9 Muir Drive, St. Albert, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 14, 2016 at 11:00AM.
