Obituary for Norman Jack Fortnum
Norman Jack Fortnum – May 21, 1926 to December 18, 2017. Jack passed away peacefully in his 92nd year after a long and healthy life. Jack was born in London Ontario where he met and married his wife of 62 years, Myrtle (Carruthers) Jack will be lovingly remembered by his four children, Dianna (Merv Henwood), Brenda (Doug Fry), Dennis (Ruth Conroy), and Jack (Rosemary Armstrong), his eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and countless friends and other family who were blessed to know him. He was predeceased by his three brothers Russell, George, and Jerry. Jack was a World War II Veteran, joining the Royal Canadian Navy in 1943 at the age of 17. He was a founding member of Knob Hill United Church in 1955 and his dedication to the community and others around him would continue throughout his life. Many will remember Jack as a volunteer at the Toronto Zoo, where he would give tours to school children, others will remember him as the Veteran selling poppies at the entrance to the Toronto Zoo, and many more will remember him as the co-lead of the Remembrance Day Services at the Toronto Zoo for the last 21 years. Jack received many awards for his volunteer work including the Lieutenant Governor’s Volunteer of the Year Award. Jack touched many lives with his big smile, big laugh and big heart.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Jack’s life. He will be resting at Chapel Ridge Funeral Home – 8911 Woodbine Ave, Markham – visitation will be held on Thursday, December 21 from 6 to 9pm and Friday, December 22 from 11am to 2pm. A service celebrating Jack’s life will be held at 10:30am Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Central United Church – 131 Main St. Unionville. In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Toronto Zoo or the Veterans Poppy Fund.
