It is with great sadness we announce that Mary passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 23, 2017. She was predeceased in 2008 by her beloved husband Terry. Mary spent her childhood in Calgary with her 3 sisters and a brother. In 1942, at the age of 15 she moved to Vancouver with her mother after her father died. Mary graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Home Economics in Dietetics. She met her husband while at UBC and they married in 1953. They settled in Vancouver, built their house on Puget Dr. and spent the next 46 years raising 6 children.
Mary balanced her family commitments while working for many years as the Dietician at Mt. St. Joseph’s Hospital where she pioneered the first multicultural food menu. After her children were young adults, she left dietetics and began a new career as a successful Realtor in Vancouver. Summer holidays were full of water sports and campfires with family, relatives and many friends at the family built cottage on Okanagan Lake. Weekly bridge games with Terry and good friends, sewing, reading and symphony concerts were favourite pastimes.
Mary was a wonderful mother and a great role model for her children. She is remembered for her love of family, her commitment to helping out whenever she was needed – hard working, kind, fair, caring, always there, self-sacrificing, and always thinking of others. All who met her were touched by her generosity, kindness and compassion. Mary and Terry left a legacy of family values, education, and a belief in hard work, respect and empathy.
Mary is survived by her 6 children Jim (Cheryl) McCreight, Geri (George) Paterson, Shannon (Michael) Sorochan, Lori (David) Shortridge, Andrea (Kim) Findlay, MaryAnn (Robert) Balshaw, 15 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; her sister Sheila and many nieces and nephews.
Our family would like to extend thanks to the Care Aides and LPNs on Villa Milano, the Rec. Therapists and other staff of Villa Carital.
Prayers will be held on Wed. August 30th at 7:30 pm at Immaculate Conception Parish, 3778 W. 28 Ave. Vancouver where Funeral Mass will be held on Thurs. August 31st at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of BC or Franciscan Friars of Western Canada in Mary’s memory.
