Gilbert Reynolds

Dean died peacefully, surrounded by family and loved ones, at Groves Memorial Hospital on the morning of Tuesday July 25. He was eighty-four years old. Loving husband to Berniece
Joanne (née Riddell), devoted father of Debbie (Athol), Dwight(Dana) and Derek, and proud grandfather of Jesse, Tyler, Torrie, Samuel, Callie, Jenna and Owen. Brother of Lynda (Ted)
Usher, brother-in- law to Jack (Karen) Riddell and Libby (John)Shackleton, and uncle to Jenny-Lyn, Ken, Kevin, Krista, Karen and Sarah. Predeceased by his parents, Stanley and Edith (née
Davis). Dean was born and raised in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. Growing up, he was a talented piano player who studied with renowned Canadian composer and pianist Mario Bernardi, as well as a gifted athlete who played football for the Kirkland Lake CVI Red Devils. Dean also met
Berniece Riddell in Kirkland Lake, his wife and best friend of sixty-four years. The two
married in Toronto in 1954 and moved to the community of Don Mills to start a family.
Dean worked for Ontario Hydro from 1954-67, at which point he accepted a position in
the Computer Science Department at the University of Guelph. Dean and Berniece moved
their young family from Toronto to Elora, buying the old Chalmers’ Church manse on
Henderson St. and beginning their longstanding connection to the Centre Wellington
community. Dean retired from the University of Guelph in 1988. Over the years, Dean was active in his community as a Scout Leader, a longtime blood donor, and as a member of the Elora Curling Club, the Wellington District Freemasons, the Elora Legion, and Knox Presbyterian Church. A keen student of military history, Dean was also a longtime member of the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves, and served as the Commanding Officer of the 705 (Hamilton) Communication Squadron in the late 1970’s and again in the early 1980’s.
A drop-in celebration of Dean’s life will be held in the basement of Knox Presbyterian Church in Elora on Wednesday August 9, 6:30-8:30 p.m. The family would like to give their thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at Groves Hospital for the excellent care that Dean received over the last month. Donations in memory of Dean may be made to the Groves Memorial Hospital Building Fund, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are entrusted to The Graham Giddy Funeral Home, 280 St. David Street South, Fergus. (519)843-3100 www.grahamgiddyfh.com
