Lee passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 29, 2017 in Vancouver. Born June 14, 1924 near Wilcox, Saskatchewan, the second child of Stanley Ryan and Pauline (nee Runyon) in a family of nine children.
Predeceased by Frank, her loving husband of 59 years; brothers, Wayne, Gordon, Leonard and Irwin; and youngest son, Brent. Survived by her sisters, Doris and Norma; brothers, Gary and Murray; daughter, Denise; sons, Neil, Mark and Greg; grandchildren, Elisabeth, Cathryn, Allison, Jemma, Colin and Myles; and great-grandchildren, Abigail and Michael.
Lee grew up on a wheat farm and attended Notre Dame College, where she earned a BA degree. In 1946, while working at Chateau Lake Louise, she met Frank McDaniel, who had also grown up in Saskatchewan and who had served in the RCAF as a mechanic in Britain during the war. Lee took a social work degree at UBC while Frank pursued his MA in social work. During the Christmas break in 1947, they married in Vancouver and took an apartment in the West End. After their first child Neil was born in 1949, they moved to Little Mountain Army Camp, then bought a house on nearby James Street. Over the next few years they had four more children; Greg, Mark, Denise and Brent.
Lee and Frank were active in many community organizations, including the Mount Pleasant Lions Club, South Van Elks, Vancouver Curling Club, Dunbar Lawn Bowling Association, Varsity Alley Bowling and Legion 142. Lee particularly enjoyed lawn and alley bowling as well as bridge and mah-jong. She was high average 5-pin bowler and past Ladies President of the Dunbar League and singles champ several times. Lee lived independently well into her 90s and greatly enjoyed her ever-growing family.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff of Windermere Care Centre for their care and compassion during Lee’s final days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC Cancer Society.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
