Steve Chanas
Suddenly, on Friday May 12, 2017, Steve passed away at his home at the age of 83. Forever remembered in the hearts of his wife Marilyn, daughters Tracy and Kelly, son Tim (Jan), grandsons Adrian & Dylan, sister Ann, brother-in-law Jack (Deb), as well as many extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Eva and Jon and brother, Peter.
Steve was born in Poland on March 3, 1934. The family immigrated to Canada in 1938 settling in East Selkirk where Steve attended grade school and worked on the family farm. At the age of 16, Steve and his buddy Sam Uskiw, travelled east by train and worked in various jobs along the way. Upon returning home he was hired by Imperial Motors in Selkirk and enrolled in a 5 year auto body apprenticeship which he finished in 1957.
Steve worked in various automotive shops in Winnipeg and continued working the family farm. He met and married Marilyn in 1961 and in 1962 they began the slow process of building their home while raising their family. Marilyn & Steve started their own business – Highway Auto Body, which they ran for many years. Their free time was spent with family camping and fishing in the summer, picking berries and mushrooms in the fall and snowmobiling in the winter.
After many years they sold the shop and Steve decided to further his career. He challenged the GED and attained his Grade 12 standing. He was then accepted at Red River Community College and in 1979 received his diploma in Business Teacher Education- Vocational Industrial. He was then hired by the College as an auto body instructor and worked there for approximately 13 years until his retirement.
Over the years Steve and Marilyn travelled many miles throughout Canada and the United States. They wintered in Texas for 17 years and had many adventures and made many friends along the way.
Steve was always quick to embrace his children’s friends as members of his own family; always quick to offer to help fix whatever was broken or lend a hand when needed. Many hours were spent in the back garage with Tim and his buddies fixing and restoring cars, bikes, lawnmowers, tractors, etc. Steve had many titles; husband, father, grandpa, friend, fisherman, traveller, auto mechanic, auto body specialist, teacher in school & life, Mr. Fix-it of just about everything.
The family would like to express their thanks to the Paramedics, Dr. Alexander and the medical staff of the Selkirk Hospital for the assistance and kindness they showed to Steve and our family.
If friends so desire donations may be made in Steve’s name to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).
