Obituary
Wilfred Lawrence Bird passed away peacefully on June 13, 2017 at Foyer Lacombe in St. Albert, AB after a valiant battle with prostate cancer.
Wilf is survived by his loving wife, Anne; his three sons, Doug (Karen), Ken (Rebeccah), and Larry (Sandra); six grandchildren: Kelsey Brisebois (Braedon), Madison, Jordan, Eric, Georgia, and Charlotte; three sisters, Chris Mooney, Yvonne Dunstan, and Noelle Hoffart (Wendell); three brothers, Raymond, George (Donna), and Adrien (Deanna); together with many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his brothers-in-law Ed Clayton (Marilyn), Dan Clayton (Joanne), Wayne Clayton (Edy), and his sister-in-law, Marie Maksymchuk (Dennis). Wilf is predeceased by his sisters Nesta, Gladys, and Doris and by his brother Maurice.
Wilf was a kind and caring man who loved being with family and friends. He had a wonderful sense of humour, he loved to laugh and he made everyone around him laugh as well. Wilf was born in Moosomin, SK on September 18, 1932. At age 17, he saw adventure beckoning and joined the Royal Canadian Navy. After 5 years service, he met his wife of 58 years, Anne Clayton, and moved to Alberta where they raised their sons Doug, Ken, and Larry. Wilf taught school for 20 years after earning a teaching degree from the University of Calgary. After retirement, Wilf and Anne embarked on many adventures across North America. Wilf was passionate about many hobbies. Over the years, he took piano lessons, built violins, constructed furniture, took up oil painting, and brewed many bottles of wine and beer. He was an excellent dancer who loved the jive and old-time waltzes. He loved camping and fishing with his family, and proudly drove his sons to their sports and model airplane competitions. He also enjoyed a game of golf with family and friends. He adored his six grandchildren and all they are about; that they were all able to spend some time with him over the last few months of his life was extra special.
The family would like to thank Drs. Kasavan, St. Martin, Basappa, and their teams, as well as the very caring staff at Foyer Lacombe for their excellent care. Thank you as well to all our family and friends who visited Wilf over the last few weeks or kept in touch by telephone and e-mail. A very special thank you to Anne’s sister Marie who came and stayed for several weeks to provide comfort and support.
