Obituary
After a short battle with pancreatic cancer, the family of Penny Reeves sadly announces her passing. She is survived by her husband, Robert of 50 years; daughter, Nicole (Clay) and son, Danyon, all of Edmonton; sisters, Vera Pezer and Naomi (Art) Selent of Saskatoon; nephews, Darrin Pezer, Todd (Leah) Pezer and great niece, Josie and great-nephew, Joe Pezer. She was predeceased by her father, Joe (1972), her mother, Olga (1992) and her brother, David (1996). Family was very important to Penny; with events like Christmas, Easter, birthdays and anniversaries marked by superb food, quality time together and lively conversation. Penny was very attached to her beloved Borsa relatives and looked forward to reunions and family gatherings.
Penny was born in a farmhouse on NW23,44,22W2 Saskatchewan, prematurely as a twin (her brother died) and taken in a lined shoebox to the hospital in Kinistino, SK where she was nicknamed “Penny” by the nurses because of her bright colour. The family later moved to Meskanaw, SK where Penny graduated from high school and then from Robertson Secretarial School in Saskatoon. She then worked at Saskatoon Crest Craft Ltd., The Saskatoon Construction Assoc. and finally the Federal Department of Public Works as a contracts clerk. Married in 1967, Penny and Bob bought a house and later moved to Winnipeg, Vancouver and Edmonton. There she worked for the Federal U.I.C.
In 1973 they moved to their new home in St. Albert where they would raise their two children, and became involved in the community working for Welcome Wagon. In 1981 she was elected as a trustee to the St. Albert Separate Protestant School Board #6. In 1984 she established and was the owner/sole proprietor of P.R. Office Services for nine years until she sold the business. At this time she was also a Commissioner of Oaths. She won the St. Albert Chamber of Commerce Small Business of 1989 Award and served as President for 1991. During this time Penny was President and Past President of the St. Albert Progressive Conservative Constituency Board. In 1991 she was appointed to the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta where she served a six-year term. In 1992 she was elected to St. Albert City Council where re-elections allowed her to serve her community for nine years. This led her to serving five years as a director on the Community Planning Assoc. of Alberta. She became a Director for the St. Albert “Merchants” Junior B Hockey Club from 1992 to 2006, serving as Secretary, President (1997-1999) and Past President (2000-2002). In 2000 she earned the Rotary Club of St. Albert Integrity Award.
In 2000 she was elected to the Capital City Savings Credit Union (later to become Servus Credit Union) Board of Directors, and held that position for sixteen years until her passing. In 2001 she was appointed to the Alberta Credit Union Central Board (Chair 2004-2010), appointed to the Credit Union Central of Canada Board (2005-2011) and then was elected to the World Council of Credit Unions (2006-2011) as one of two representatives from Canada. International travel was a basic component of the work, and during her tenure she would travel to many countries. In 2002 she was elected to the Board of the Canadian Co-operative Association and as a Trustee of the Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada for three years. Under a Governor General Order in Council she became a Chair of the Employment Insurance Boards of Referees for the Edmonton region (2008 to 2012). She received her Institute of Corporate Directors Certificate in 2015. These opportunities, along with numerous vacations enabled Penny and Bob to travel to many parts of the world, resulting in experiences Penny loved to .
Family, friends and colleagues remember Penny as a cheerful, conscientious, hard-working ally with a quick sense of humour. Her practical, common sense nature served her well in her varied initiatives, contributing to smooth operations whether at home or around the Board table. Those whom she touched are richer for the experience. “A successful life does not rely on being dealt the best cards. It is measured by playing the cards that are dealt to the best of one’s ability” This quote captures Penny’s life … in spades.
The family would like to express its appreciation for the superb care Penny received from staff at the Cross Cancer Institute, Station #43 at the Grey Nuns Hospital, the Royal Alexandra Hospital and Covenant Care Foyer Lacombe, St. Albert.
