Mary Smith

Obituary
Peacefully and with her family by her side, our beloved mom, GrandMary, sister, aunt and friend passed away on March 12, 2017 at the age of 85 years.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Shannon and son-in-law, Ken; her grandchildren, Emily, Jennifer, and Katrina; her brother, Michael (Diane); sisters: Teena, Helen (Rick), and Elsie (Gordon); her many nieces, nephews and extended family; her PEO sisters and many friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward; brother, Edward; and parents, Annie and Michael.
Born in the district of Mossey River Manitoba, the daughter of Annie and Michael Babey (Bobee), Mom was the eldest of 7 children. She grew up on the family farm and moved to Winnipeg as a young adult where she eventually met and married Edward James Smith on June 1, 1963. She worked for a few years at several local factories until she obtained her license as a hairstylist and then became a full time homemaker and mom after adopting her daughter, Shannon. Over the years, she was an active volunteer in several church communities and a proud member of the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter T.
Mom was a deeply spiritual person and her faith carried our family through each moment of every day. She did not have the opportunity to finish school as a young child but loved reading books to understand more about her faith and about her interests in nutrition and gardening. She d a love of music with Dad and was always thrilled to put on her dancing shoes and “jive” with him. Throughout the years, she cherished moments with family and friends whether it be for traditional family gatherings, casual dinner invitations, afternoon lunch dates or special Sunday brunches. Her granddaughters will always remember her wonderful smile and playful nature. They also inherited her love for animals, especially cats. Mom’s spirit was truly kind, gentle and patient always giving to others in their time of need; whether it be to listen, to help in whatever way or to bake them her famous lemon loaf.
A Family Celebration for both Mary and Edward’s lives will be held in Winnipeg at a later date this summer.
Our family wishes to extend our greatest appreciation to the staff at Venta Care Centre in Edmonton whose loving care for mom will always be remembered.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations and volunteer time on her behalf to support a Charity of your Choice would be a great honour to her beliefs, values and generous spirit.
