It is with great sadness that we, the family of Henry David MacKinnon announce his passing, with his family by his side, on Saturday, December 24, 2016, at the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born May 10, 1938, in Sydney Mines, Henry was the son of the late Stephen and Florence (Coakley) MacKinnon.
Henry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Louise (Jobes); his daughters Sandra Taylor, Georges River and Wanda Mulley, Legal, Alberta ; three granddaughters whom he adored, Melissa Mulley, Alberta, Jessica and Lindsey Taylor, Georges River, and a little bright light, his great-grandson, Dean Henry Mulley.
Henry is also survived by brothers Leo (Josie),Ontario and Roderick (Connie),Florence, sisters Catherine (Gordon Simmons) and Sharon (Doug Swail), Ontario and Marguerite MacIntrye, Sydney Mines.
Besides his parents Henry was predeceased by his brothers Johnny, Frank, Anthony and Benny, and a sister Adelaide Nixon. He was also predeceased by his son-in-law, Gregory Taylor.
Henry worked a total of 37 years in the Florence and Princess Coal Mines, and in later years at the Victoria Junction Coal Preparation Plant, retiring in 1993. Henry made many close friends who were always willing to lend a hand when needed.
Papa, as he was lovingly known to all of us, enjoyed the outdoors. He was an avid swimmer and won several Harbour swims in his younger years. He loved the challenge of distance swimming. He spent time at his cabin in Indian Brook; fishing, hunting and swimming. Papa was always happy with one of the kids at his side.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Henry’s life will take place on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. James Oliver officiating. Reception to follow at St. Stephen’s Hall, Florence. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory made be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
