Therese Ann Pottie – River Bourgeois
June 03, 1949 – November 28, 2016
With profound sadness and broken hearts, Donnie and Charline announce the peaceful passing of their loving wife and mother Therese, aged 67 on November 28th at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Therese fought a brave fight with cancer until she was received into the arms of her Lord. She passed away peacefully with her loving family at her side.
As a member of St. John the Baptist Parish, she was active as a Eucharistic Minister, gift bearer, usher and greeter. Following in her mother’s footsteps Therese dedicated 42 years to the Catholic Woman’s League of Canada, holding several convener ships at all levels in the League. She was president of the River Bourgeois Council from 1978-’83; Antigonish Dioceses President from 1989-’91; Nova Scotia Provincial President from 1996-’98 and also offered for the National presidency. In 1998 she was awarded a life membership by the National Council. Her knowledge and commitment to the League was greatly valued, especially by her home Council.
Therese also volunteered many hours to the River Bourgeois Community Service Society and the River Bourgeois Historical Society. In her working life, Therese was employed with Merit Insurance, Halifax, The Town of Port Hawkesbury, Sears Port Hawkesbury and was a causal employee of Canada Post for twenty five years prior to her illness.
Therese is survived by her devoted and doting husband of 46 years Donnie and their daughter Charline (Al) Covin of Dartmouth; sisters Jeanette Landry and Lucille (Paul) Martell of River Bourgeois; brother Blaise (Gretchen) of Baddeck; brothers- in- law Wally (Liz)Newmarket, ON; Wayne (Paula) Hatchett’s Lake, NS; sisters-in-law Linda Pottie, Halifax and Vera (Basil) Bourque, River Bourgeois; several God-Daughters, many uncles, nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to mention.
Therese was predeceased by her parents John in 1993 and Rita in 2007 (Landry), brothers George in 1999, Lloyd in 2003 and a sister Marie in infancy. She was also predeceased by sisters-in-law Diane Slaunwhite and Patsy Pelrine.
The family wishes to express their sincerest gratitude to the many wonderful specialists and nursing staff of the Cape Breton Cancer Center, Sydney as well as the compassionate doctors and nurses of the Strait Richmond Hospital for their care and support provided to Therese in her final few days. Your sincerity and professionalism allowed her to spend these days in comfort and with dignity.
Therese’s generous donation of her eyes, which will be used for tissue transplant/research, was inspired by her daughter Charline’s passion in the field of Organ & Tissue transplantation. Charline has been employed in this field for the past 22 years.
Visitation will be held on Thursday December 1st, from 2-9pm at the River Bourgeois Funeral Home, River Bourgeois. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday December 2nd at 11am at St. John the Baptist Church, River Bourgeois with Rev. Anton Astor officiating. Cremation will follow with burial at a later date.
Family flowers only, please. Memorial offerings in Therese’s memory may be made to the Catholic Woman’s League, River Bourgeois; the River Bourgeois Funeral Home or a charity of one’s choice. Funeral arrangements and messages of condolence are entrusted to the care and compassionate offerings of Greens Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury
