The death occurred on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2016 at the House of
Providence in Toronto, Ont., of Rev. L. Clark McAulay, C.Ss.R., age
92. The last surviving member of the late Louis and Carrie (Clark)
McAulay family. He was predeceased by sisters Alma Sheehan, Florence
McAulay, Jessie Dunsford, Carol Ann Wakelin and brothers Loman,
Elliott, Milford and Frank McAulay. Survived by sisters-in-law Betty
McAulay and Marie McAulay. Uncle Clark is fondly remembered by
numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and
great-grandnieces and nephews.
Fr. Clark grew up and was educated in Charlottetown,
attending Queens Square Primary School and St. Dunstan’s
High School. After graduating from St. Dunstan’s University,
Fr. Clark attended St. Mary’s College (1947-1948) and
entered the Redemptorist Novitiate (1948-1949) at St. Alphonsus
Seminary in Woodstock, Ont. He made his First Profession of Vows on
Aug. 2, 1949. Fr. Clark was ordained on June 29, 1952 and celebrated
his first Solemn Mass at St. Dunstan’s Basilica in
Charlottetown. During his studies in Rome (1953-1956) Fr. Clark dined
with Cardinal Roncalli, the future St. Pope John XXIII in Venice. Fr.
Clark earned a J.C.L. (Doctorate) in Canon Law at Lateran University
in Rome. Back in Canada, Fr. Clark was Professor of Canon Law at St.
Alphonsus Seminary, Woodstock, Ont. (1956-1957) and Holy Redeemer
College, Windsor, Ont. (1957-1966). Since 1966, he served at the
following Redemptorist Parishes: St. Patrick’s, Quebec City
(Pastor 1966-1981 and 1988-1999); St. Teresa’s, St.
John’s, Nfld (1981-1984); St. Peter’s, Saint John,
NB (1999-2006); and St. Patrick’s, Toronto, Ont. – The
National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help – from 2006-2015. Fr.
Clark moved to Providence Center, Toronto, Ont., in May 2015. Fr.
Clark was immortalized in St. Patrick’s Parish, Quebec City,
with a bronze bust, sculpted by Anglican Archdeacon Peter Joyce. A
gifted tenor, Fr. Clark recorded a CD of Irish and Scottish songs at
the age of 80, to raise funds for a church building and renovation
project for Chapel Grove, NB. Fr. Clark had a wonderful sense of humor
and loved a good laugh. He was able to connect with people from all
walks of life and was a gifted story teller. Father Clark greatly
valued family and traditions and took great pride when he would
discover new family roots. We are privileged and very grateful to have
loved and been loved and to have shared life with this wonderful,
dignified gentleman.
Resting at the Hennessey Cutcliffe Charlottetown Funeral Home
until Monday, then transferred to St. Dunstan’s Basilica for
funeral mass at 10 a.m. Interment to follow in the Roman Catholic
Cemetery, Charlottetown.
Visiting hours at the funeral home on Sunday 3-7
p.m.
