Obituary for Sarah Haslam
HASLAM: Sarah Jane “Jennie”. March 4, 1917 – September 24, 2016. It is with sadness and love that we announce the passing of Jennie Haslam (nee Maguire) on September 24, 2016 at the age of 99. Jennie was a remarkable woman, loving, compassionate, curious, with a warm smile and an enthusiasm for life. Jennie is predeceased by her husband of 58 years Thomas, in 2004. She was also predeceased by her parents, Sam and Gertrude, brothers Harvey and Mel and sisters Violet, Mae, Hazel and Elsie. Remaining to lovingly cherish her memory are her son, Don, many nieces and nephews and many friends. Jennie was born in Elgin, Manitoba and lived on the farm with her family. She attended Beauty School in Winnipeg and returned to work at her chosen profession in Brandon. A woman of great energy, she practised hairdressing in her home salon for many years and worked with her husband at their grocery store, Haslam’s Superette, in central Brandon. She was also fond of arts and crafts, making ceramics and doing handiwork. Jennie continued to do knitting and crocheting for various charities while living at Riverheights Terrace. She most recently resided at Rideau Park Personal Care Home. Jennie was active in the retirement community and made many new friends in her twilight years. Jennie’s Graveside Memorial service will be held at the Brandon Cemetery Columbarium on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. A tea to honour and celebrate her life will follow at St. George’s Anglican Church, 1011 – 5th Street at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jennie may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, #3 824 18th St, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 5B7.
