Tom Pruden – 2016

John Harold Thomas (Tom) Pruden
March 22, 1936 – September 12, 2016
On Monday September 12th, 2016 surrounded by loved ones, Tom Pruden died at the age of 80 from cancer at the Selkirk General Hospital. Tom was predeceased by his mother and father Harold and Nellie, his sister’s Barbara and Janet, and his beloved daughter Pamela. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 55 years Penny, his children Candy, Karyn (Pat), Tom (Sandra); grandchildren John, Stevie (Joel), David, James, Michael and Hannah; and his adorable great granddaughter Light and great grandson Aiden.
Tom was born in Selkirk on March 22, 1936 and was brought home to the family’s little cabin at « The Point » on the bank of Netley Creek in Petersfield. In 1942 the family moved to their home on Wavey Creek in Clandeboye. As a boy and young man Tom had many good times along Wavey Creek (Prudenville) with his grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and many cousins and friends. Tom especially liked hunting and trapping with his father. Tom went to school at Clandeboye School and graduated in 1953.
After graduation Tom worked at various jobs before finally deciding to become a Correctional Officer at Stony Mountain Penitentiary. In 1964 Tom decided to move his wife and two young children (Candy and Karyn) to Stony Mountain. While in Stony Mountain two other children were added to the family (Tom junior and Pamela). Tom thoroughly enjoyed his time in Stony Mountain and he and Penny formed many friendships. He liked spending time at the Legion and was also a good athlete who enjoyed playing ball on the Guards baseball team, along with bowling, curling, and darts.
During the time in Stony Mountain Tom bought a nice pop-up camper and proceeded to take the family on many wonderful camping trips. The highlights of the family excursions included trips to Jasper, Banff, the Black Hills, and the family’s favourite spot in Manitoba – Hnausa. These memories were some of Tom’s favorites, and he often enjoyed reminiscing about the family camping days.
Once the kids got older Tom decided to move the family to Winnipeg to make it easier for them to continue their education. After 15 years of living in Winnipeg Tom decided it was time to build his retirement home and return to his roots along Wavey Creek Road. In 1996 after 32.5 years of service at the Penitentiary Tom retired.
From 1995 till 2010 Tom and his wife Penny lived in their wonderful retirement home on Wavey Creek. It was during this time that Tom got to indulge in two of his life’s passions – gardening and wood working. Tom got great joy from growing flowers and landscaping his yard, he also loved to create lawn furniture and various other wood projects. He was most happy being in his garage or out in the sun in the yard.
In 2011 Tom and Penny moved to Selkirk and their son Tom bought their retirement home to keep the land in the family. During this time Tom and Penny became quite close to their neighbours Monty and Yvonne and their very special granddaughter Gianna who often comforted Tom when he was not feeling well.
Tom had many good times during his final years. He really enjoyed the big family reunion that was held in 2011 along Wavey Creek. He also immensely enjoyed the 80th birthday party that was held for him at the Clandeboye hall this past March.
And of course no life story about Tom would be complete without mentioning his love of sports. Tom had many great memories revolving around sports; he especially enjoyed watching the Bombers win several Grey Cups, watching Canada win Olympic hockey gold, and the Selkirk Steelers winning the Anavet Cup.
Ultimately Tom was a very kind handsome gentleman. Everyone who met him quickly learned what a nice man he was. He was very forgiving and devoted to everyone he loved. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten. His gentle spirit most certainly made the world a better place.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, September 20 at 2:00 p.m. in the St. George’s Anglican Church, Clandeboye, MB, with The Ven. Godfrey Mawejje officiating.
To my beloved husband: I’ll be seeing you in all the familiar places. I’ll be looking at the moon, but I’ll be seeing you – P.
In lieu of flowers, or just from the kindness of your heart, please make a donation to help Candace and Jason Schellenberg. Their 2 year old daughter Brenna is battling brain cancer. You may drop off or mail your donations to their home at: 106 Strathnaver Avenue, Selkirk MB, R1A 0G9. Thank you in advance, Tom would have loved this gesture of kindness. God Bless.
