Jeanette Cleo George – 1926-2016

Jeanette Cleo George
1926-2016
GEORGE, Jeanette Cleo- Age 90, Truro and formerly of Upper
Whitehead, Guysborough Co., and Toronto passed away peacefully on
Wednesday, August 24, 2016, in the Colchester East Hants Health
Centre, Truro. Born on March 22, 1926, in Upper Whitehead, she was a
daughter of the late Abraham « Abe » and Margaret Ann
(Grover) George.
Jeanette grew up and attended school in a one room school
house in Upper Whitehead, moving to Halifax at the early age of
sixteen to accept employment at the Victoria General Hospital. In the
fall of 1944, she moved to Toronto where she married and raised her
family. Jeanette was employed for many years at General Electric of
Canada in Toronto. With the closure of her division at General
Electric, she then accepted a position with Volkswagen Canada in
Scarborough, Ont. In 1977 after heart surgery she moved back to Upper
Whitehead returning to Toronto in 1979 and then back to Truro in 2008
to live out her retirement years and be near her loving sister.
Besides her family she had two loves, needle work with her pieces seen
in homes of friends and family, but most of all was her car and the
ability to drive it until three months before her
90th birthday. Blessed for sure.
She is survived by sons, Michael (Patti) Vecchiola, Toronto;
Ronnie (Debbie) Vecchiola, Florida; Joseph (Tahea) Vecchiola, Milton,
Ont; biological son, Philip George, Antigonish; brother, Paul (Linda)
George, Queensport; sister, Adeline Desroches, Truro; daughter-in-law,
Mary Vecchiola, Brookfield. There were two very special people in her
life, one a very special young man, Nicholas Finn of Toronto, whom she
babysat for all his younger years and they remained very close
throughout the years up to the present time. Their relationship was
very loving and respectful as like a mother and son. Second is Carol
Vecchiola of Halifax, Jeanette and Carol had a bond that lasted till
the very end and only they could describe the love that they shared
for each other over the years. Loving friends to the end! She also has
eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; along with many nieces
and nephews.
A special thank you to the doctors, nurses and other staff of
the Palliative Care Unit of Truro Hospital who provided such excellent
and compassionate care in the final days of her earthly journey. Also
we must not forget Zylpha Taggart, Senior Support Worker of the
building in which Jeanette lived. Many times Jeanette described Zylpha
as her angel, so true. Her care and dedication goes well beyond the
call of duty to all her residents.
She was predeceased by her son, Anthony
« Tony » Vecchiola; brothers, Edward, Harvey, Percy,
Ira and Abe; sisters, Winnie, Thelma, Juanita; half brothers, Allan
George (Port Felix) and Seymour Meads (Queensport).
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday in Christ
Anglican Church, Queensport and from where funeral service will be
held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday with Rev. Sue Channen officiating.
Cremation will follow and committal of the ashes will be at a later
date. Donations in Jeanette’s memory may be made to Christ
Anglican Church, Queensport or to a charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock
Funeral Home, Canso. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family
