Merrilee Loewen passed away early last Monday morning, suddenly yet peacefully, in her loving partner’s arms.
Merrilee was a woman of quiet dignity and elegant beauty, of strong character and of deep humility. These qualities earned her the respect and love of many loyal friends. The loss of Merrilee and her supportive, loving nature has left us all reeling with grief and confusion.
She was a woman of steadfast personal beliefs, powerful lessons for us all — Let your actions speak for themselves; Live a life of honesty, integrity and kindness; Put the needs of others first; Recognize and give support to the underdog; Make peace before conflict; Love and respect animals for the souls they are.
Merrilee leaves behind her loving spouse Karl Galbraith and their children, Brad Galbraith (Cass Lutz), Emily Galbraith and James Clarkson. She was the heart and soul of our small family universe, someone we relied on and who never let us down.
The loss of Merr is deeply felt by her family in Winnipeg—her mother Arlene Loewen, brother Alex Loewen (Bev) and their children Brock (Robin) and Thalin (Kenton), and sister Bonnie (Mark) and their children Kyra, Isaac, Jacob and Ajah. Her passing was preceded by her beloved father Lorne (2013). Merrilee be forever remembered in sadness, yet fondness and profound love, by both the Loewen and Galbraith families.
Her strength of character and concern for others earned her a wide network of loyal friends, lasting relationships and abiding love. She made a point of bringing together people from all points of her life, sharing many evenings and elegant dinners in friendship. Her passing leaves an impossible breach in the framework of these interconnected friendships.
If you knew Merr, you experienced her profound love of animals and in particular her dogs—from Oliver to Bogart to Tessa Mae and most recently, the rowdy yet loving Winston. She was as loyal and giving to these spirited souls as she was with everyone and everything she touched.
Through the warmth of her love, her constant concern for others and the moral example of her actions, Merrilee Loewen created an eternal legacy of love that lives on in all of us. For this we are grateful.
A memorial service will be held at Birchwood Chapel, Steinbach, Manitoba on Sunday, August 21st, 2016 at 2 pm. Later, in the fall, there will be a celebration of Merr’s life with family and friends that will take place in Ottawa. As expressions of sympathy and love, donations in Merrilee’s name may be made at your local Humane Society.
