Arthur George Gagné of North Vancouver died gracefully at home at the age of 92 surrounded by his loving family and comforted by his faith in God. Born to Joseph Rosaire and Emelia (Fortier) Gagné on August 21, 1923 in a farmhouse in a wheat field near Coderre Saskatchewan, described on his birth certificate as Sec. 5, Tp. 14, Rge. 3,W. 3, Art grew up in Moose Jaw enjoying life exploring the prairie fields and coulees with his 2 brothers and 3 sisters. He attended the University of Saskatchewan, but left mid-term to join the army where he served as an artillery officer during WW2. From his family he learned to live life with kindness, humour, fairness and generosity. He married Daisy (Dora Willis) in Moose Jaw and they were together for 71 years. In 1946 they moved to BC where he graduated from the Vancouver School of Art and later worked as a commercial artist. He finished his career in printing sales, remaining involved in the design of many client projects. Art’s keen eye could find surprising beauty in the simplest of things, both natural and man-made and he loved to share his perceptions with those around him. A leaf, a shadow, or a fine painting could move him equally and he passed this special gift on to his grateful children and grandchildren. From him they also learned how to cook an omelette, build a fire, and appreciate good books, good food and chocolate. Art was an active parishioner at Holy Trinity Catholic Church for over 50 years. He enjoyed gardening, art, golf and spending time with family and friends. There was always a saying on our wall at home “those who give love, gather love”. This was so true of Art. He is survived by his wonderful wife Daisy and his 7 daughters: Rosie, Claire, Teresa, Michelle, Patricia, Lou and Fran. He will also be fondly remembered by his current and former sons-in-law: Brian, Denis, Rob, James, Bob, Ron, Graeme and Bill, and by his sister Lucille and husband Mike, brother-in-law Bob, sister-in-law Lucy and his many nieces and nephews. He was a loving grandfather to his 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and will also be greatly missed by his many friends. A Funeral mass will be held at Holy Trinity Church, 2725 Lonsdale Ave, North Vancouver, on Friday July 29 at 11am, followed by a reception downstairs celebrating Art’s life. Evening prayer vigil at 7pm on July 28. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Holy Trinity Church Convent Fund. Our thanks to Dr. Paisley Howard and to the North Shore Palliative Care team for their outstanding support and care. We are so blessed.
