Blennerhassett Rowland (Buster) – 2016

Blennerhassett, Rowland (Buster) Buster just passed away at the age of ninety-four. Born Roland Nelson Blennerhassett in Montreal, Buster came into the lives of the Aronson family more than sixty years ago. How that happened is a cosmic mystery. All that can be said is whatever force conspired to bring Eddie (Father Aronson), Bessie (Mother Aronson) and Buster together had some sense of humour; funny if not funnier than Mel Brooks. But that’s a story for another time. In grade seven, we were assigned a composition to write about the most interesting character we ever met. In retrospect, I had a number of choices available (Eddie and Bessie to name just two) but the one I chose was Buster. Why? Because Buster was a man who did things that I’d never seen done by an adult. In short he was years ahead of his time. Before the environmental movement and recycling became the norm, Buster was the quintessential environmentalist. Recycling and reusing were in his DNA. Old broken down garden chairs set out as garbage were routinely rescued and rehabilitated. Rags that were used to clean tires were washed and reused. Discarded hub caps lying in the road were retrieved and eventually turned into a business. Newspapers were collected, kept and used for other purposes. All this beginning in the 1950’s when anything and everything ended up in the garbage at the end of the driveway and consumption, not conservation was the practice. Buster was also ahead of his time in knowing the value and benefits of exercise, good nutrition and the perils of smoking. This in the 1950’s where “physicians” in magazines were recommending their favourite brands of cigarettes and few adults – at least in my neighbourhood –considered exercised important.. The only people we saw on bikes were kids. Until Buster of course. Buster bought a bike, affixed a huge box on the rear fender – similar in size to a car trunk – and biked daily wherever he needed to go. Raining? No problem. He’d just open up his big old black umbrella tethered to his bicycle bar and like Mary Poppins just keep pedaling along. For these and many other reasons, Buster was in my eyes then and to this day, one of the most colourful and unusual people I’ve ever met. He will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Buster. Apr 29, 2015
