Remembering Winston
It is with great sadness that we, the family of Winston Dean Weir of Truro, NS announce his peaceful passing on February 24, 2025 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre. He was the son of the late Fred & Ruby (Allen) Weir.
Winston is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 62 years, Judith “Judie” (Archibald); his daughter, Shelley (Robert) Power and grandsons, Joshua & Christopher Power; his son, Trevor (Linda) Weir, and granddaughter, Emilee Weir; aunt, Wanda Smith; sister, Helen Densmore; mother-in-law, Elva Archibald; sister-in-law, Pat Brown; brother-in-law, Brian (Karen) Archibald, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his father-in-law, Charles Archibald; brothers, Fred and Ken Weir; brother-in-law, Garth Densmore, brother-in-law, Don Brown; sister-in-law Effie Weir; nephews, Kenneth Weir and Gary Weir; nieces, Pamela Weir and Debra Weir.
Winston was born in Juniper, New Brunswick, on September 25, 1940, in his grandmother’s living room. He lived in New Brunswick, Tracadie, NS, and moved to Brookfield, NS when he was 13. When he was 14 years old he joined the 569 Air Cadet Squadron for five years until he graduated from South Colchester High School in 1959, and went into the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1960 as an Air Traffic Controller until 1970. He worked in carpentry for a while then opened Weir’s Rentals in 1973. He also had Ryder Truck Rentals which he ran until he retired in 2009. He was on the Board of Directors of the Rental Assoc. of Canada (Region 10 of the American Rental Assoc.) for eight years. He served a term as both President and Chairman. He was voted one year Rental Man of the Year for Canada by the American Rental Association which was a great honor for him. He was on the Board for the Colchester Credit Union for several years. He was also a member of the Truro Air Force Club. He enjoyed playing cards with the members there each week.
Winston was a very proud man, proud of his children, and very proud of his grandchildren. He loved his family and friends. He would be the first one to help anyone out who needed it.
Winston went back with 569 Air Cadet Squadron as the Supply Officer, and was also the Commanding Officer for 3 years. When he aged out in 2005, he went with the Nova Scotia Air Cadet League, on the Executive as the Regional Central/North East Director until 2016. He enjoyed the cadets immensely, mentoring and guiding the cadets to learn new skills, to serve the community, and to advance by gaining knowledge and passing it on to other cadets. He was so happy to help with the Glider School in Debert. He built a hanger for the gliders there, which they named after him. He loved flying and had bought a 1937 Aeronca Super Chief, two-seater plane which was in pieces in boxes. He rebuilt this plane in New Brunswick with his uncle, a cousin, and his brother Fred. Fred also taught Dad how to fly and he was on cloud 9 when he finished his plane, and passed his pilot license. He took many of us lucky people up for plane rides over Truro, and many other of his favorite places to fly over.
Winston donated his body to Science at Dalhousie University to assist Medical Students in their learning. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Diabetes Canada, Colchester East Hants Health Centre Foundation or the Air Cadet League of Nova Scotia.
We would like to thank the First Responders, the doctors and nurses in the Emergency Department and the ICU, Rev. Cathie Crooks of First United Church, Truro and to Cory Lunn at Coulter’s Funeral Home in Tatamagouche.
