William Twaddle Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we share William Twaddle (preferably known as Bill) peacefully passed on Thursday afternoon January 30 2025. Bill was 93 and in the company of his family during his last hours. Bill is survived by his daughter Carole, his son Bill and partner Ernie, three grandchildren, Keith, Daren and Jania, his brother Denis, sister-in-laws Marjorie and Jill, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Bill left a legacy behind of being a lifelong Husband, Dad, Grampa, Uncle and Friend with unconditional love, a caring heart, and giving a helping hand. Bill was hard working, loyal, trustworthy, provided guidance when required, adventurous, spontaneous, and had a wonderful sense of dry humor.
Bill never changed with is audiences. He was comfortable with being himself and many times would say, Sure, I will try anything once.
In 1963 with courage and adventure Bill moved his family (Doris, Carole and Bill) from England to Montreal, Canada by ship and then Montreal to Calgary by train. During the years ahead he worked as a finishing carpenter and later worked as a building inspector for the City of Calgary spanning 27 years, and retired at 61.
Alongside his close friend, Johnny Coptin, Bill started car curbing. They brought home vehicles, repaired them, and sold them. Carole and Bill received practical lessons in car maintenance, as did his grandsons, Keith and Daren. Keith has maintained his passion for mechanics and takes pleasure in restoring vintage cars and selling them. Fishing was another cherished activity they enjoyed together. Fishing was another cherished activity they shared. Bill showed his grandchildren how to catch salmon, and all three have continued to enjoy fishing. Additionally, golfing became a favorite among the grandchildren, particularly when they had the chance to operate the golf cart! Daren has maintained his passion for golf by watching professional tournaments on TV and has also started playing Dis-golf, which he says is free and a fantastic way to stay fit! Let us not forget how Bill always had a beer for everyone, claiming that « anytime is happy hour here! » Bill had been producing beer kits at home for more than 25 years. As his grandchildren matured and occasionally joined in Daren has kept his love of beer making and sharing it with family and friends.
In 1991 Bill and Doris embarked on another adventure to fulfill a lifetime dream. They moved to Qualicum Beach BC to design and build their dream home. They enjoyed a full and exciting 10 years there before deciding to return to Calgary to be closer to family. It was not long after, Bill took up his hammer again, continuing his skill and creativity working alongside his daughter Carole and her team swinging it until the age of 79.
In 2015 after Doris passed, the family took a trip to Qualicum Beach to spread her ashes at the beach. In that week the family participated a several exciting activities. One was a daring experience on zip line. Bill was not missing out on that one and did great! It was so much fun! To add to the experience Bill suggested we go to the Raptor Sanctuary. Bill loved getting close the raptor birds and having them land on his arm; we all took turns. What an amazing time!
In the years ahead, Bill went on several trips out of the country with his son Bill and his partner Ernie. The highlights are Honolulu Hawaii, Puerto Vallarta Mexico, Phoenix Arizona USA Peoria, Scottsdale, Sedona, Alaskan cruise. Plus many day trips around the province with his family. One of those trips involved riding in a helicopter and yes Bill had shot gun on the front seat and all ready to be co-pilot!
December 24 2023 Bill took a fall outside of his home, as a result of a stroke. His loving neighbors were there to help. Once he recovered he was transferred to the Fanning Center for rehab, then to his beautiful senior assisted living apartment. With several falls during the 5 months he was there, the last fall put him in hospital with a transition to long term care. From July 2024 to his last day there he spent many days outside going for lunch at the local restaurants, happy hours at the local pub, yes grocery shopping for his snacks and fruits, many walks around the large pond, and not to mention DQ ice cream as a a treat!
Throughout his life, Bill, realized the potential his family had. He encouraged them to recognize opportunities in a situation good or bad and in his own clever way would gently nudge you into an experience that would unlock that potential to allow growth and maturity. He would lovingly share the moments of success and accomplishment as if they were your own ideas.
Bill will be greatly missed, however, we know that God took him home to live happily and eternally ever after!
