Pamela « Pam » Susanne McDowell passed away peacefully at home in Port Rowan on January 27, 2025, surrounded by love.
Pam was born in St Thomas on August 10, 1947.
She was the youngest of four and, as her sister tells it, took that role seriously, often hiding in the bathroom to avoid the dishes after dinner. Pam soon learned a strong work ethic however, as she worked as a waitress in the family’s diner from the age of seven. Being the youngest also taught her to speak up and go for the things she wanted. In high school, Pam began dating Brian, who would become her husband of 56 years, after inviting him to a Sadie Hawkins dance.
Pam enjoyed a fulfilling career at the Royal Bank that she balanced with her hard work of raising her 3 daughters and running her household. She and Brian undertook the daunting task of renovating their large Victorian house by themselves. Together they created a beautiful home where they hosted many memorable gatherings, welcoming everyone who stopped by, no matter the time. Pam often fondly recounted one Christmas Eve where she and Brian had to stay up until morning drunkenly assembling a Barbi Dream Camper after friends stopped by to celebrate the holiday with them.
She loved to travel. She and Brian took their daughters on several trips south when they were young. Once their children were old enough, Pam and Brian began to take some time for themselves, venturing to different countries. This eventually led them to Chicxulub, Mexico. There they found a friendly community of local residents and snowbirds where they formed many special friendships. It became their second home, where they would spend several months each year. Pam and Brian loved to spend their summers at their trailer in Port Rowan, eventually building a beautiful home overlooking the water. Pam appreciated nature, and took much joy in watching sunrises and birds from her deck. She also enjoyed boating and soaking up the sun out on Long Point Bay.
Pam’s gentle, polite nature combined with her quick wit made her a cherished friend and family member. Pam loved visiting and playing cards with friends, and staying active in her community through organizations like the Kinettes (where she served as President), the Lioness club, the Aylmer Ladies Breakfast Club and the Port Rowan Red Hat Society. She had a vibrant, often naughty, sense of humor and loved to have a great time. For as long as she was able to, Pam enjoyed staying physically active through volleyball, softball, curling and line-dancing. She expressed her creative side through knitting and trying out various hobbies such as stain-glass and wood-carving.
Pam’s love for her family was always evident and generously given. She took great joy in supporting her children and grandchildren’s interests and pursuits. Pam was known for her thoughtful gestures, always remembering birthdays and special occasions. Her care for others was evident in her frequent reminders to her loved ones to drive safely (and to be careful of the weather, and to look out for deer, and to be careful of other drivers….you get the idea). She nurtured a special bond with her grandchildren, even introducing them to the art of tattoos—though only when they turned 18!
Pam lived with chronic illness for the last 20 years of her life, facing the many challenges with strength, determination and courage. Brian was devoted to ensuring that she could live as freely as possible and they overcame many obstacles together with creativity, steadfastness and humour.
She was the beloved wife of Brian McDowell and a devoted mother to Melissa (Fred), Amanda(Oscar), and Michelle (Carl). Pam was a proud Nana to Sagan, Sebastian, Ayla, Everett, Mariska, Eric, and Kurtis, and cherished daughter of Joe and Dorothy Cline. She was a loving sister to Pat (Anne), Peter (Lois), and Paula (Bill), and an adoring aunt to many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Pam will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held at the H.A. Kebbel Funeral Home, Aylmer on Thursday, February 6, 2025 from 6-8:00 p.m. A celebration of Pam’s life will be held at the funeral home on Friday, February 7, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior.
Donations to the Aylmer Area Community Foundation or the Hospice of Elgin would be appreciated. Share memories and condolences at kebbelfuneralhome.com
