Olga Patricia Cheeseman Obituary
In Loving Memory – Olga Patricia Cheeseman
July 17, 1928 – February 6, 2025
Olga Patricia “Pat” Cheeseman (née Zwarych) of Milton passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, February 6 at the age of 96.
She was the beloved Mother of Captain John Cheeseman (Judy) of the Oakville Fire Department, Patricia Benoit (Don), Captain Albert Cheeseman of the Toronto Fire Department (Pamela Butler), Robert Cheeseman, Thomas Cheeseman (Carol), and Kathleen Reid (John); Grandmother of Michele Marchesan (Dan), Tamara Benoit (Kenneth Dunne), Tracy Bonus, Dawn Anne Benoit (Paul Hindman), John Cheeseman (Allison), Karen Baldassi (Renzo), Daniel Cheeseman (Angie), Matthew Cheeseman (Annie), Jo-Anne Dumoulin (Jeff), Lyndsey Dugdale (Kevin), Thomas Cheeseman (Jon), Firefighter Nicholas Cheeseman (Erica) of the St. Thomas Fire Department, Ryan Cheeseman (Brittany), Rebecca Kanade (Rahul), Nicole Guenther (Tim), Rachel Young (Ryan), John Reid (Haley), and Robert Cheeseman (Veronica); and Great Grandmother of Bailey, Benn, Lyla, Mackenzie, Jacob, Joshua, Shannon, Meghan, Joshua, Kristen, Lauren, Ryder, Hudson, Adelaide, Wyatt, Eva, Lillian, Ily, Lincoln, Michael, and Daniela. She is predeceased by her mother- and father-in-law Albert Edward and Patricia Catherine (O’Keefe) Cheeseman, her parents Andrew and Anne Zwarych, her husband Captain Albert Edward “Toby” Cheeseman of the Toronto Fire Department, her brother- and sister-in-law Peter and Catherine « Suzie » Konoplicky, her son John Cheeseman, her daughter Patricia Benoit and son-in-law Don Benoit, her niece Doreen Harris, her grandson Nicholas Cheeseman, and her grandson-in-law Kenneth Dunne.
Olga was born to Ukrainian immigrants, Andrew and Anne (Skolna) Zwarych, in Toronto in 1928. As a child whose first language was Ukrainian, she played violin and loved roller skating around Toronto. After surviving polio in childhood, she prided herself on being extremely healthy for the rest of her life. She was an only child and always wanted to have a big family.
She fell in love with her future husband, Toby, when she was a teenager before he served overseas in WWII. They were happily married from 1946 until his passing in 1984. She and her husband loved to square dance and often took camping trips together. She was an excellent knitter and seamstress, hand making many dresses and costumes for her family. A wonderful cook and baker, she patiently rolled and crimped her pie pastry until it looked professionally made. Her Catholic faith was central to her life, and she proudly sang in the Holy Rosary church choir for many years.
Olga spent over 20 years working for the Halton Region Health Department, serving as a secretary for the nursing and mental health teams. In her role, she coordinated a variety of services, including school registrations, prenatal classes, and free programs for seniors. She was very proud of her job and often spoke of her work, long after she retired.
She witnessed and experienced many things in her 96 years, but her greatest achievement was her family. A mother to 6, grandmother to 18, and great grandmother to 21, she leaves behind an incredible legacy that will be remembered for generations to come. As she always signed off her phone calls and cards, “mee mees”, “God Bless”, and “love you millions”.
