Obituary of Nelson « Cleo » McFadden
It is with profound love and deep sadness that we share the passing of Cleo McFadden whose
life touched countless hearts and whose memory will forever be cherished. Cleo was blessed to
have spent his years born, raised, growing up, and raising his children on his father’s family farm
on RR7, Claymore Line, Dresden until moving to the Oaks Retirement Home in October, 2024.
Cleo passed away peacefully, Monday, February 24, 2025, in his 95th year with his wife by his
side.
Born in Chatham, son of the late Roy and Hazel (Shaw) McFadden. Beloved husband and love
of his life Marilyn Joyce (McKerrall) McFadden of 73 years. He was both a gentleman and a
gentle man who, in his quiet way, demonstrated an inner strength and a faith that was a lifelong
example for those who knew and loved him. His family, the focus of his love and the
beneficiaries of his life lessons, begin with Barry (Jill); Jeff (Cindy); Pam (Ron); and Dean
(Mary). The love was extended to his 9 grandchildren; Stacey (Mike); Greg (Tia); Adam; Katie
(Adam); Ryan (Marcie); Nicole (Dan); Madeline (Sheldon); Chloe; and Deanna as well as his 10
great-grandchildren; Alex, Tessa, Hudson, Max, Elouise, Cash, Colt, Talus, Sage & Esme.
Predeceased by father and mother-in-law Edgar & Velma (Forsyth) McKerrall; Brothers & sister-
in-laws Melvin (Kathryn); Vernon (Adorena); and daughter-in-law Louane McFadden.
Throughout his life, Cleo wore many hats and was never afraid to try something new. Gifted with
skilled hands and a determined spirit, he worked at the Canadian Sugar Factory in Chatham
where he laboured diligently to buy a diamond for Marilyn. His career journey took him to
International Harvester, crop spraying for Clifford & McKenzie, and working alongside Howard
Irwin as a carpenter. Cleo sold cars at Hallmark Motors in Wallaceburg, raised cattle, and
successfully ran a cash crop farm, embracing each role with dedication and hard work. Cleo
loved working the land, hunting, fishing and raising his feathered friends. During the winter
months he enjoyed a quiet craft of carving ducks.
His proudest moments were watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren swim in the
pool, cheering them on at baseball or hockey games whether it be playing or refereeing, and
attending many dance and piano recitals. He and Marilyn never missed an event and always
showed up to support their beloved grandchildren.
Cleo was proud to serve in various roles at Lindsey Road United Church and the Dresden
Community Church. He was a founding charter member of the South Chatham Township AOTS
men’s group alongside Rev. Clifford Brown. Additionally, he served as the President of the
Dresden Agricultural Society in 1981 & 1982, contributing to the community with dedication and
service.
Cleo was deeply loved and cherished by his family and friends, always reminding us “Nothing is
more important than family”. His legacy of faith, love, kindness and service will continue to
inspire and guide all who had a privilege of knowing him.
A private family service will be held at a later date to celebrate a life well lived. Donations, in lieu
of flowers may be made to a charity of your choice or to the charities listed which have touched
our families; CK Hospice; Shine Foundation and London Children’s Hospital
