With deep love, the family announces the passing of Mary Isabel MacLean, who lived a remarkable 102 years filled with faith, family, and service.
Born at her home on Concord Road in New Lairg, Nova Scotia, Mary grew up on a farm where she often remarked that she felt “rich”—not in material wealth, but in the love and care of her parents, Christena and William Robertson. From a young age, she knew she was destined to be a school teacher. She pursued her passion, graduating from high school and attending teachers’ college at 18, before starting her career in the classroom at just 19. She maintained a love for education throughout her life, not only in schools but also through her enthusiastic involvement in the community.
Mary shared a loving 57-year marriage with her husband, David Hugh MacLean. They resided in Hopewell, where they raised their three children, Lloyd, Barbara and Elizabeth. Their marriage was filled with laughter, music, dancing, and countless social events. As a devoted volunteer, Mary believed it was important to give time and talent to associations or groups that helped make the community better. Mary and David loved to go on family adventures—whether camping, taking road trips in the van, or visiting family in the beautiful Belleisle, New Brunswick.
Mary’s faith was the foundation of her life, and she devoted herself to serving God, her church, and her community. As a dedicated member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church, she sang in the choir, participated in Bible study, and was an active member of the Atlantic Missionary Society and Guild. Mary had a flair for theatre, often writing and performing skits for church and community theatre groups. Mary was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Hopewell Legion, Branch 137 and, in retirement, joined the Silver Light Rebecca Lodge. She played an integral role in the Home and School Association.
A lifelong lover of literature, Mary found joy in reading, especially the works of L.M. Montgomery. She loved the high-spirited ‘Anne’ and sharing her stories with her many pupils.
Above all, Mary cherished her role as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Family lunches every Sunday after church in Hopewell are treasured memories for her four granddaughters. An inspiration to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Mary was full of warmth, wisdom, humility and quiet humour. She never shied away from new experiences—she ziplined with her grandchildren at 87 and bowled in a league until she was 101.
She is survived by her children, Lloyd MacLean (Gwen), Barbara MacLean (John McLean), and Elizabeth MacLean (Jim Cruikshank); her granddaughters Emily McLean (Ryan Leach), Sarah McLean (Donald Hartt), and Kate MacLean (Alex Moffett) and great-grandchildren Logan and Felix Wadden, Grace and Nolan Hartt, and Mary McLean Leach.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, David; her parents, Christena and William Robertson; her brothers, Earle and Lloyd Robertson; her cherished granddaughter, (Mary) Rachael McLean; and her “sister-cousin”, Ella MacMillan. She also reunites with dear sisters-in-law, Jean Fraser, Mae MacLean, Nellie MacLean, Martha Treggallis and Ethel Robertson.
Mary received loving care at home thanks to a dedicated and compassionate team. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Mary’s caregivers and devoted friends, Marlene Chisholm, Michele Woodroffe and Arlene McNeil.
Mary leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness. Always a teacher, perhaps one of the greatest lessons she leaves with us is her belief in what makes a life truly rich—not wealth or possessions, but the gift of joy and love of the people closest to us.
Mary will be deeply missed but forever celebrated.
Visitation will be held at H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Chapel in Stellarton on Saturday, March 22, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
A service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Hopewell on Sunday, March 23rd, at 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory can be made to the Palliative Care Society of the Aberdeen Hospital or a charity of your choice.
