Armstrong, Marcia (Moss) Kay: October 17, 1946 – January 31, 2025, Peacefully, at age 78. Dearly loved by her brothers Marc (Lynn), Mason (Silvia) and William (Rebecca). Predeceased by her parents Howard and Elizabeth Armstrong (nee Ainslie), and her sister, Mary Armstrong. Deeply missed by her nephews and nieces, Rob (Caroll), Laura, Charlotte, Rebecca (Cory), Matthew, Liam (Sasha) and Sarah, cousins and her many friends and extended family.
Born in Windsor, Ontario in 1946, and the eldest of five children, she lived in Windsor until the family moved to Toronto in 1957, and throughout her life she left no doubt in anyone’s mind as to who the « boss » was amongst the siblings. In 1960, Moss entered Leaside High School and very quickly teamed up with another bunch of grade 9 girls all full of life and fun and adventure. They quickly formed a group and humorously named themselves “the Beerbrawlers” and had a gathering each Saturday night to watch the Leafs and to have the usual teenage adventures. Little did they know that this would be a lifetime commitment to a devoted group of friends who 64 years later are still having summer weekends at cottages and other gatherings. They managed to have one last “Beerbrawl” at Sunnybrook for Moss and it was full of love and laughter. Individuals in this group also took turns visiting her in her last five months and even threw a 78th birthday party for her. What they loved in Moss was her authenticity, her wicked sense of humour, her creative mind and art skills and her ability to laugh heartily about so much.
A gifted artist in her youth, Marcia attended the Ontario College of Art, and she held a succession of positions in the graphic arts and commercial advertising sectors. Ever the active sports and outdoor enthusiast, Moss never failed to embrace the passion and joy the many activities these venues offered. Feeling the lure of adventure, she moved to New Orleans in 1980, supporting herself with her skill as an artist, returning to Ontario, in 1993, where she held various jobs, ultimately retiring in 2011.
The very same qualities that made her adored by the Brawlers, were the same things that drew a large group of fans and friends to her throughout her life, and most recently at Sunnybrook. There, with the many people she interacted with, Moss decided to live her life out loud until she passed and so began months of classes in art, cooking and music. Her humour and quick wit added so much to these classes and made them so much fun. Classes were followed by spontaneous long discussions on a myriad of topics which brought a sense of normalcy and vitality to fellow patients and the volunteer instructors.
Cremation has taken place as per her wishes. Internment and a celebration of her life will be held in the spring, timing to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Canadian Cancer Society or the Palliative Care Unit at Sunnybrook hospital in Toronto would be greatly appreciated by the family. We would especially like to thank the staff in K1C Palliative Care Unit – Sunnybrook – for all their care and kindness shown for Marcia and friends and family. She will be greatly missed!!
