In an irreplaceable loss to a sizeable international circle of friends, colleagues, family and loved ones, Kisha Ferguson, a beloved journalist and bonne vivante, died on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, in Toronto, after a five-month battle with kidney cancer. Kisha was born on August 29, 1969, and grew up in downtown Toronto, raised by her mother, Jeanne Isley, and beloved by her stepdad, Dave Hunter. She attended Jesse Ketchum Public School and Jarvis Collegiate, before earning a journalism degree at Ryerson Polytechnic (now Toronto Metropolitan University), where she made many of her lifelong connections. After working at the CBC and other outlets and spending a year teaching English in Osaka, Japan, in 1996 she co-founded the innovative travel magazine Outpost with Chris Frey, and served as its editor-in-chief for more than eight years, during which time she received the National Magazine Award for Magazine of the Year (2003) among many other honours. During the 2000s Kisha was a story producer for CTV’s Canada AM, a regular book reviewer for The Globe and Mail, and co-authored, with Jennifer Morton, the book Dirty, Drunk, and Punk, about legendary figures in the Kensington Market punk scene. Starting in 2007 she spent half a decade as a producer, writer and editor for CBC News in Toronto, then spent two years as an adjunct professor of journalism at Centennial College and working as a senior writer and producer for CTV National News for almost three years in 2013-15. In the spring of 2016 Kisha’s endless quest for new experiences took her to Istanbul, with a series of senior program editing positions with the network TRT World lasting six years – a volatile period that began with a coup attempt and included upheavals throughout the region. Kisha’s bohemian apartment near the Bosphorus became a social hub, and her wide experience and generous personality made her an influential and admired figure among Turkey’s young journalists and experienced veterans. She adopted street cats, including the legendary Major Tom who moved back with her to Canada in 2022. Her return to Toronto was a new beginning and a reunion of old friends. After half a year as a CBC News producer and writer and a stint as an editor at Zoomer Magazine, Kisha found what was to be her culminating project, as founding showrunner and lead producer for the TV Ontario series Big If True, an acclaimed weekly program focused on disinformation and conspiracy theories. In November of 2024, Kisha took medical leave over what turned out to be a metastasizing kidney cancer. She endured a series of treatments in the care of her mother, but by April the disease had become untreatable, and Kisha chose to move to a terminal-care hospice. Kisha was surrounded by friends and loved ones in her final days, and retained her warm-hearted spirit and engaging personality to the end. She leaves behind her mother, Jeanne; her stepfather, Dave; her brother, Jason; sister-in-law, Cynthia Ferguson; and nieces, Catherine Trepani and Grace Ferguson; as well as a very wide but close-knit circle of friends and admirers. A funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 15th, at 3:00 p.m. at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, 1585 Yonge Street. It is requested that cameras be kept off and no photos or videos be taken. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
