Kelly Jeanne Appleton
27 May 1986 – 22 April 2025
On a beautiful spring morning, as her grandmother held her hand, we said goodbye to our beloved Kelly.
Kelly was born in Kingston, Ontario to Richard and Sheila Appleton. She later lived in Toronto, Wingham and Dungannon, Ontario. In her early years, Kelly faced the health issues that came with the diagnosis of Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome (4p-). A real fighter, she survived heart surgery, seizures and many other complications. Most of her first eighteen years were spent in the loving care of the foster family of Pixie and Jim Oates which included her sisters Jenny and Sara and big brother, Martin. These years had their challenges but there were also some very happy times, including many weekends and even international travels with her grandparents, Bill and Patricia Appleton. Those long walks she took with her beloved grandfather surely increased her strength and endurance! She was especially fond of her Aunt Hilary and enjoyed frequent visits with Hilary and her family. Kelly took great pleasure in lively music and loved sharing a story book with her grandmother. She had a keen interest in meeting and observing others, and though she was non-verbal, she was always able to make her likes and wishes clearly known. On the sad death of Pixie McLaren, Kelly and Jenny moved to the kind home of the Richardsons in Wingham. As Kelly entered young adulthood, Sharon and Jerry joined us to cheer proudly for her as she graduated from F.E.Madill Secondary School (Wingham) in the Special Education Class. Subsequently, Kelly and Jenny were welcomed into the wonderful home of Sharon and Harvey Munro of Dungannon, where she also developed a strong attachment to Danny, a new foster brother. There she lived eighteen years of happy family life in a beautiful home. The Munros provided devoted and loving attention and Kelly’s health blossomed in their affectionate care and protection. She delighted in interesting travel adventures with the Munro family and met many new friends and carers. We all enjoyed the group birthday parties each May that Sharon hosted to bring together the families of her foster children.
Our family would like to extend our thanks to the many people over the years who have shared in Kelly’s excellent care: her long term foster mother, Sharon Munro, her special respite families, her many doctors, nurses and assistants, Cassandra Moore and the team at Family Homes Perth-Huron, the staff in palliative care at the AMGH and finally the kind and supportive staff at the Huron Hospice in Clinton.
In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate donations made in Kelly’s name to Family Homes Perth-Huron, Alexandra Marine General Hospital Foundation or Huron Hospice in Clinton.
A memorial reception will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2025 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Falconer Funeral Homes – Bluewater Chapel, 201 Suncoast Drive, East, Goderich, Ontario.
