We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Karen Elaine Bullerwell (March 8, 1962) on January 10, surrounded by her loving family at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. She faced a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 44 years, Harold “Bernie” Berry; her daughter, Chelsea (Jason) Hebron; her son, Jesse (Lois) Amirault’s Hill; her brother, Murray (Bernice) Hebron; and her father, Murray (Clyde River). She also leaves behind her beloved Aunt Gloria (Brian) Brooklyn; Uncle Frank “Tunny” (late Aunt Freida) Brooklyn; Uncle Joe (Marilyn) New Tusket; many cousins; her beloved grandchildren, Autumn, Landon, Charlotte, Forrest, and Harrison and her dog, Kane.
Karen was raised in Brooklyn by her cherished grandparents, Grammy Laura and Grampy Blake Bullerwell, and later in life, she resided in Milton Highlands with her true love, Bernie, where they raised their family.
Karen’s family was everything to her. She proudly dedicated herself to being a stay-at-home mother, seeing it as her most important job in life. She celebrated every moment and achievement of her family and always put them first. Karen was her children’s biggest fan! She loved to attend their school and sporting events and was heavily involved in volunteering, even after her children graduated.
Her joyful spirit also shone through her love of nature and animals. Karen enjoyed caring for the family’s beloved shepherds: Sheena, Kruz, Kaycee, and, most recently, Kane.
Through photography, Karen captured the profound beauty of her family, community, and nature, especially sunsets, cardinals, and deer. She once supported an orphaned deer, « Bucky ».
In addition, music held a special place in her heart; she loved attending concerts with friends and family and volunteering at music nights with her aunts and uncles. Music always played in her home, and she passed that along to her children.
Karen had a strong interest in politics. She enjoyed assisting with Elections Canada and always kept up with the news. She was eager to discuss how current events affected her community and wasn’t afraid to advocate for causes dear to her.
For 30 years, Karen supported Bernie as an advocate for the fishing industry. Her love for her family was matched only by her commitment to her community.
There will be a visitation Thursday, January 16th ,2025 from 7-9 p.m. in the Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. A Graveside Service will take place at a later date from the Chegoggin Cemetery. Family flowers only.
The family would like to thank Dr. Scott Livingstone and his team in Halifax, along with the caring VON nurses, the doctors and nurses on 4 North, for their excellent support. Special thanks to the Palliative Care team—Dr. Cooper, Cassandra, and Kate—whose guidance and care meant so much to Karen and her family during this difficult time.
In her memory, donations can be made to the local SPCA, honouring her love for animals and her dedication to the community.
Karen will be greatly missed, but her kindness and love will always be remembered by those who knew her.
