1927-2025
The death of Joseph Sylvester Bernard occurred Tuesday May 13, 2025 at
Hotel Dieu St. Joseph Hospital, Perth-Andover. He was born March 20,
1927 in Tobique First Nation, NB and was the son of the late George
and Marion(Moulton) Bernard. Besides his parents he was predeceased by
two sons: David Bernard and Gregory Bennett; six sisters: Bernadette
Sappier, Mary Mitchell, Regis Waloven, Sylvia Craft, Faye Bernard and
Imelda Bernard; five brothers: Frederick Bernard, Herman Bernard,
Maynard Bernard, Leonard Bernard and John Bernard.
Joseph Sylvester is survived by his daughter Anne Smith(Dwain); son
Stanley Bernard; two brothers: Charles Bernard and Eldon
Bernard(Della); two grandchildren, Desiree Smith and Candice Peters; 4
great grandchildren, Henrik Robertson, Lauchlan Robertson, Isla
Peters, Elowyn Peters; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended
family.
Joseph Sylvester Bernard spent his life as a military man serving in
both the United States and Canadian Militaries. When he retired from
the Canadian Military in 1956 he begun his second passion in life and
that was singing and performing. Joseph took on the stage name of Hank
Eagle, this name would bring him recognition through out the Maritimes
and the United States. Hanks repertoire was Country and Western,
English songs, which he translated to Maliseet Dialect as well as
originals he would write himself. Hank had the honor of being able to
preform with such greats as Charlie Pride, Stonewall Jackson and
Waylon Jennings. Along with these great achievements he is also know
for being the first to start the Native POW WOW celebrations in the
Maritimes first being at Tobique First Nation, NB.
A celebration of Joseph Sylvester Bernard’s life will be held Friday
morning May 16, 2025 from the home of Imelda and Dave Perley, 4 Perley
Road Tobique First Nation. The sacred fire will begin at 9 am. A
Burial service will be held at 2:30 pm at the Bernard homestead.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Brunswick Funeral Home,
Perth-Andover, NB.
