October 11, 1920 – March 20, 2025
With deep gratitude for her life and all she meant to us, Jean’s family announces her peaceful passing at the age of 104 on March 20 at Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow Nova Scotia.
Born Violet Catherine Maud Bramble on October 11, 1920, in the hamlet of Wickham New Brunswick to John and Miriam (McCrow) Bramble, she was adopted by Fred and Jennie Grant of Grantville, Nova Scotia when she was 4 years old. She spent many happy years in Cape Breton helping her father in the general store. After graduating from high school, she stayed in Grantville to provide support for her parents before moving to Montreal at 20 for secretarial training. Throughout her career life, Jean held many secretarial positions that she loved, including at Clairol Inc. in Knowlton Quebec, and the Heavy Water Plant in Port Hawkesbury Nova Scotia. Being in the office was always a joy for her.
In 1979, through the efforts of her brother Charles Bramble of Maugerville New Brunswick, Jean was reunited with her Bramble family. She was grateful she had been given so much time to experience the love of her siblings and their families.
Jean’s energy often seemed boundless, and her grin was always on display, revealing a love for all the pleasures of life, large and small. She revelled in her bridge clubs, endless phone calls to friends, telling jokes, driving her car, crosswords with coffee early in the morning, a glass of wine later in the day, Scrabble games (often 3 or 4 of them a day), trips to the mall on the lookout for a new top, red nail polish, music and dancing, sending and receiving hundreds of Christmas cards, Tim Horton’s donuts, onion rings—the list is too long to include here. How she loved talking, hugging, and being in motion! In her later years, she leaned on a shopping cart, then a walker, and finally a wheelchair, but even then, near the end of her life, she used her feet to propel herself around the halls of Glen Haven Manor. She lived independently until she was 97. The photograph with this obituary was taken in her residence on her 100th birthday.
Jean was predeceased by her first husband Reginald Hugh Harris; second husband Reginald Alfred Payne; and loving partner Henry Raymakers; siblings Rose, Lucy, May, David, Charles, Harold, Kenneth, and Mabel. She was also predeceased by her son Thomas Harris (Cherie) and daughters-in-law Cherie and Wilma.
She leaves her daughter Beverly Harris (Jack Penfold), sons David Harris (Wilma) and Allan Harris (Deb Sangster), as well as grandchildren Bruce, Morgan, Simon, Saskia, Rebecca, Allison, Jonathan, Andrew, Richard, Julie, and Matthew, along with 12 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews of her Bramble family.
A family burial will be held at a later date in Maugerville Baptist Cemetery, Maugerville, New Brunswick.
