Obituary for Hong Man Wong
November 11, 1942 – January 9, 2025
Hong Wong passed away peacefully on January 9, 2025. He is survived by his wife Sophia, son Jeffrey, daughter Michelle, daughter-in-law Jennifer, and grandsons Samuel and Augustus.
Hong Wong grew up in rural Toishan, China, in his ancestral family’s farming village. As the eldest son, he was a model student.
After time in Hong Kong, he came to Canada on his own, officially landing in August 1957 under the name Kit Sing Wong. When he first arrived in Canada, he lived in Campbellton, New Brunswick. There, he worked at his uncle’s restaurant while attending high school. He attended University of New Brunswick and then went on to study electrical engineering at University of Toronto.
He met his wife, Sophia, in Toronto. They moved to beautiful British Columbia. His son Jeffrey was born in Prince George, before they settled in Coquitlam, where daughter Michelle was born.
In his long career as an electrical engineer, he designed the electrical systems for many Vancouver landmarks like Dr. Sun Yat Sen Garden and the International Buddhist Temple, as well as international projects in Chile and across the United States.
As a building contractor, he organized the design and building of three houses, including two of his family’s homes in Coquitlam.
One of his joys was golf – he loved playing the game. He enjoyed many travelling adventures. He was also a great storyteller.
He was strong-willed, brave, and cared deeply for his family. Though he lived on the west coast, he kept close ties with his extended family in Toronto.
During his illness with cancer (mesothelioma), he kept a fighting spirit throughout his treatments.
Hong will forever be remembered as a devoted husband, a caring brother, a loyal friend, a loving father, and a proud grandfather.
He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
