In Loving Memory of Gino Filice
October 30, 1946 to May 19, 2025
Gino Filice lived with purpose, presence, and a heart wide open to family, friendship, and the simple joys of life.
Born in the hilltop town of Rende Cosenza, Italy, Gino was shaped by the land and the work it demanded. He planted softwood trees and eucalyptus, worked as a security guard, and learned grit alongside his late brother Carmine in construction. These were the early chapters of a man who would go on to build a life marked by dedication, generosity, and depth.
In the spring of 1967, Gino made the difficult decision to leave his extended family in Italy and immigrate to Canada. He settled in Toronto and, like so many newcomers, worked his way through a patchwork of jobs at Toronto Carpets, Pine Furniture, Olivetti Typewriters, and in construction. It was in 1968 that he found his professional home at The Ontario Food Terminal, or simply “The Market” as he always called it.
He started as a truck driver delivering produce downtown and eventually rose to foreman and then salesman, roles in which he thrived. Gino was honest, hardworking, and deeply respected. He had an instinct for quality, a natural ability to connect, and an unwavering work ethic. Many of his customers became lifelong friends, drawn in by his sincerity and charisma.
It was also in 1968 that he met Angela, the love of his life. They married the following summer and built a life rooted in loyalty, perseverance, and shared commitment.
Gino was a man who found peace in the outdoors. He was a skilled hunter and fisherman who spent weeks each year in hunting camps and on the waters of lakes and rivers. He proudly filled the family room with trophies of antlers, fish, and even his first coyote as markers of time well spent doing what he loved. Many of those experiences were shared with his son and grandsons, who he mentored with patience, pride, and a deep sense of tradition.
One of his greatest escapes was the trailer at Chemong Lake, where summers were filled with early morning fishing and the kind of quiet that feeds the soul. It was a place where he could just be, close to nature and far from the noise of everyday life.
After retiring, Gino turned a quiet property in Amaranth into a small paradise. A hobby farm bursting with life. Bunnies, guinea pigs, and ferrets. If it had fur and could enchant a grandchild, it had a home there. He was a self-taught horticulturist with a magical green thumb, proud grower of vegetables, trees, and plants.
He was also a natural fixer and maker. A self-taught engineer of sorts, Gino was never far from a roll of Velcro, elastics, or bulldog clips. These became his unofficial toolkit for solving almost anything. He loved a challenge and had a gift for finding simple solutions to complex problems.
Gino leaves behind his devoted wife Angela, son Giuliano and grandsons Marc, Adam, and Lucas, daughter Ida, son-in-law Keith, and granddaughters Angelica and Vanessa. He is also survived by his sister Angela Pastore in Italy and many extended family members who felt his love across time and distance.
He was predeceased by his parents Antonio and Ida Filice, his sister Gianna, and his brother Carmine, now peacefully reunited with them.
Gino had a presence that put people at ease. He was warm, generous, and grounded. Whether at The Market, at a family gathering, or helping family and friends with projects, people felt better simply being around him. Despite some hardships and regrets, and there were many, he lived a meaningful life. One built on effort, connection, and the quiet satisfaction of doing things his own way.
He will be missed more than words can say.
Visitation will be held at the Dods & McNair Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre, 21 First St., Orangeville on Thursday, May 22nd, 2025 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
