Gerald Chesley
« Jerry » Bishop, 88, of Kentville, a beloved father and
grandfather, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2025 in the Valley
Regional Hospital, Kentville.
Known for his
adventurous spirit, he was an accomplished fisherman, with a
reputation for being able to « catch a trout in a pothole. »
His cousin owned Bishop’s U-Catch. There, he showed many how
to fish, including a country boy named John Denver. In his younger
years, he loved hunting trips with his family and
friends.
Jerry had a love for
bluegrass and country music. He was known to play guitar, piano, and
the mandolin. He loved to have jam sessions with friends and play
guitar until the party was over. He was well-loved for his sense of
humor and ability to make anyone smile.
He enjoyed baseball,
bowling, and playing golf. Jerry always took the time to help others,
particularly those struggling with alcohol addiction. As a dedicated
sponsor in Alcoholics Anonymous, he touched the lives of many and was
a steady source of support and guidance.
He was a stamp and
coin collector, hobbies that brought him peace and joy. He was a
devoted father, always there for his children, offering unwavering
support through every challenge they faced and supportive through all
their rights, and their wrongs.
Jerry had a diverse
and dedicated career, contributing to the community in many ways. He
worked for the railway in the car shops, in Kentville, until he left
to run his Irving gas station in Aldershot where many of his customers
became like family. He later went back to work at the railway in
Kentville alongside his father and brothers. Later, he joined the
Department of Highways, where he played an important role in
maintaining the roads and infrastructure. His service to the public
continued as a custodian at the Provincial Building in Kentville,
where his attention to detail and reliability were well respected. He
spent his retirement years with his wife, Roberta, and continued
fishing and bringing home his big catch to be cleaned and
cooked.
He was predeceased by
his parents, John « Jack » and Dorothy Mae (Landry) Bishop;
wife, Roberta (Eaton); and brothers, Robert and Frederick. He was the
last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived by
children, Charmaine Bishop (Glen Fitzgerald), Coldbrook; and Michael
(Leanne) Bishop, Wilmot; grandchildren, Kelsey (Samson) Learn, Staci
Bishop, Jessica MacQuarrie and Alexis MacQuarrie; great-granddaughter,
Avia Bishop; and extended family.
A funeral service will
be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 30, 2025 (with livestream) in
the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Donations in
Jerry’s memory may be made to The Crosbie House Society.
