Age 103, died peacefully on Thursday, January 23, 2025, in Camp Hill Veterans Hospital, Halifax. He was born in Margaree Harbour, Cape Breton on October 11, 1921. He was the son of the late Malcolm Scott and Gladys Maude (Fry) Munro. During his early youth years, he grew up in the West End of Halifax and attended Chebucto Junior and Bloomfield High Schools. In 1942, He enlisted and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as Flying officer in Bomber Command and Transport groups in Europe and Southeast Asia (India & Burma). After the war he returned to Halifax in 1946 and joined Maritime Tel. & Tel. as a Central Office equipment technician and later as supervisor for CO switching sites throughout Nova Scotia. In 1946 he met his future wife Lavinia who worked as a telephone operator. They were married August 17,1947 and were together for 72 years living in the Halifax and Bedford areas. In the 1950’s, he was given leave from MT&T and spent several years as an Air Force Reserve member on the Pinetree Line Radar bases in Seneterre (QC), Parent (QC), Beaverbank (NS), and St. Margarets (NB). He worked 32 years with MT&T and retired June 1978. Throughout his life, he always enjoyed his times in Belle Cote and Northeast Margaree roaming the fields and up the brooks fishing.
He will be sadly missed by his son Ross (Henrietta) and daughter Nancy (Wayne). He is survived by his grand-children, Chris, Callie, Allison, and Rachel; his great grand-children Chelsey, Dominic, Elliot, Lucas, and Sophie.
He was predeceased by his wife Lavinia, and grand-daughter Savanna.
Cremation has taken place under the care of T.K. Barnard Funeral Home.
The Celebration of Life visitation for both George and Lavinia Munro will be held at the TK Barnard Funeral Home in Lower Sackville on Friday, February 14th from 1-4 PM. Interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery on Saturday, February 15th at 11 AM.
Donations in memory can be made to IWK Children’s Hospital and Salvation Hospital.
