It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Gene Vandenberghe. Gene passed away on Sunday, December 1st, 2024 in his home at 72 years of age.
Gene was the eldest of 7 children. He was an amazing big brother to all his siblings. From an early age, Gene was known to be kind and hard working. Gene and his brothers were somewhat mentored by their father in the fun world of taking things apart and then putting them back together again. The nuts and bolts of all things mechanical. This is where he learned to be neat and organized. In Gene’s shop, there is a place for everything and everything in its place. We have joked that you could eat off the floor of his shop!
Gene fathered three children: Garth (1971), Sheila (1971) and Shane (1977), all born in Killarney. In his younger years, he had various interests. He participated in team roping with his pal Paul Unrau. He was a hockey fan, and hockey player himself, earning a trophy as a midget in 1968. He was a proud “hockey parent” watching his young sons play the game, and in his later years played hockey with the “ole” timers. He traveled to Sturgis by motorcycle with a circle of friends at least 4 times in the 1980’s.
Gene was lucky in love as he wed his best friend and wife Barbara Bartley in 1991. They honeymooned in Hawaii and in later years made two other trips to the islands. They also travelled to Arizona, Florida, Nevada, Wyoming, North & South Dakota and various trips in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, & Alberta were also in the mix.
In 1997, tired of city life they purchased 12 acres of land from Barb’s mother. After many hours of labour, they re-carved out the old yard site and their RTM home arrived in 1998. They both loved to garden, camp and keep their acreage in immaculate condition. This was their HAPPY PLACE together. It didn’t matter what season you went out to there home, it was beautiful. Gene was very talented, he designed and built everything and anything to enhance their home & yard and built many implements to use on the acreage as well. Gene always had a project on the go.
Gene worked for various Case Power dealers for about 30 years altogether. Attending all the service schools offered to him. In 1991, he challenged the test and received his Interprovincial Heavy-Duty Mechanic certificate. He worked in Winnipeg on Volvo trucks for 8 year, receiving specialized training and obtaining a Manitoba Government Vehicle Inspection Certificate for Trucks and Buses in 1997. He then worked at TMSD on the school buses in Killarney for 6 years. In 2008 returned to the Case Dealership in Killarney. After retiring from “pulling wrenches’ in 2014, a year later he began working LONG HOURS for farmers for 8 seasons – 7 of those with Mike Bartley.
He was a proud owner of 5 vintage Case tractors, 3 of them Garden tractors and participated in the tractor pulls in Killarney twice with his big tractors and won both times! He was disappointed in not receiving one of his trophies, because it had burnt in the jewelry store fire.
He was a sentimental sort and kept every greeting card he was given. He was also a coin collector with an affinity for nickels, likely because it was all he could afford to squirrel away. He liked to target shoot and hunt gophers. He liked candles and enjoyed harvesting firewood with his wife Barb and especially with his brother Doug.
He was a ‘neat nick’ and a gardener whose rows had to be ARROW STRAIGHT! Gene and Barb always cultivated and harvested the best potato patch, which a number of people benefitted from. He grew lots of sweet corn and there were a number of family corn roasts, where the kids had a ball riding motorcycles and golf carts around the yard.
Gene loved to read his collection or Louis L’Amour paperbacks. He re-read each one of them many times. He also enjoyed a good cup of coffee and a chat. He was a problem solver and a great listener.
Gene befriended many people whether at work or leisure with his kindness, fast-wit, expertise and knowledge which he was willing to share with practically anyone. He was a metal fabricator, a carpenter and a household handyman, but foremost an excellent mechanic. If it was mechanical, he could fix it good as new. People have commended, and it is definitely true – Gene was ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS.
