It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gabriele Porco, a loving and devoted husband, father and Nonno.
Gabriele passed away peacefully at Kootenay Lake Hospital on February 20, 2025, at the age of 91.
Gabriele is survived by his loving wife, Teresa; son, Dominic (Karissa); daughter Fortunata (Kyle) and grandson Gabriel along with numerous nieces and nephews and families.
Gabriele was pre-deceased by his parents Domenico and Fortunata Porco; sisters Ada Porco, Elena Maida and Immaculata Piro; brother Mario Porco and brother-in-laws Leonard Maida and Salvatore Piro.
Gabriele was born in Aprigliano Italy on January 20, 1934. In 1953 Gabriele immigrated to Canada to join his father and brother. He settled in Michelle BC before moving to Nelson in 1954.
In 1969 Gabriele travelled back to his hometown of Aprigliano in Italy to visit his Aunt. While on this trip he would meet his future wife and within only 2 months they were happily married.
Together they travelled back to Canada and made Nelson BC home where they built a beautiful life and family.
Gabriele enjoyed spending his days in his garden and tending to his home and yard. You could always find him puttering about making sure all was just “right”. He was very proud of the home he built for his family and all the craftmanship that went into it along with many pieces of furniture he built. He was a carpenter by trade and very talented at that.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday March 1, 2025, at 11:00am at the Cathedral of Mary Immaculate, 813 Ward Street in Nelson followed by entombment at the Nelson Mausoleum.
The family of Gabriele Porco would like to thank all doctors and nursing staff at Kootenay Lake Hospital for the exceptional care given to Gabriele in his final days.
