Our beautiful and kind- hearted Father passed early in the morning on February 11, 2025 at his home. We find peace and comfort in knowing our Dad is once again reunited with his wife, our beloved Mother.
He was the much loved Father of Monique (Michel), Janine (Henry), Henri (Debbie), Sonja (Cam), Frank (Brenda), Heidi (Joe) and cherished Opa of Kristen, Shane, Cody, Christine, Nathalie, Eric, Andra, Natalie, Audrey, Logan (Savannah). Karl (Sarah), Ryan, Martin (Hailey) and Matt. Remembered by his many niesces: Ingrid, Elvira, Eva, Wanda and Margaret, nephews: Wolfgang, Dieter, Jurgen, Leo, John, great grandchildren: Kienan, Danica, Lucien, Jace, Eden and Reign.
Born in 1935 in Donaueschingen to parents Emma and Karl Steiert, Ferdinand lived and worked on the family farm in Hufingen in the Black Forest. He was a skilled gymnast and spent much of his youth as a member of the local gymnastics team. It was in Germany that our dad began his apprenticeship as a master upholsterer. He immigrated to Canada as a young adult in 1954. When dad first arrived, he worked the harvest in the tobacco fields of southern Ontario. Those summers were hot, but he was never a stranger to hard work. Eventually dad settled in Scarborough and opened an upholstery shop on the Danforth. In 1970, both mom and dad received their Certificate of Canadian Citizenship.
It was Mom’s wish that the family make the move to the country and Fred decided to turn the family cottage into their ‘forever’home. He and our mother worked tirelessly after work and on weekends pouring concrete, putting up 2 by 4 »s and eventually establishing both a home and workshop in Port Hoover on Lake Scugog. After establishing ‘Fred’s Fine Custom Upholstering’, Dad no longer travelled to Toronto: he remained at home, working long days and running estimates in the evening, often accompanied by our mother. Fred had a passion for craftsmanship & creativity and was well know in the City of Kawartha Lakes; often sought after as an ‘expert’ in his handicraft.
The house became his perpetual project, adding on a boathouse, chicken coop, barn and sunroom as the years went on. He always made it a point to have lunch and dinner with the family, no matter how busy times were. Dad enjoyed Lake Scugog immensely: there was lots of fun boating, windsurfing, swimming, snowmobiling and cross-coutry skiing with the family and friends.
We will remember our dad as salt of the earth, always getting up early, working full days and continuing to make plans for the garden in the spring or visits he would schedule with loved ones. He remained this way until his very last hours – a testament to his strength despite the challenges that come with aging into one’s nineties. It was a life well lived. We were all blessed to have such a caring man in our lives.
To honour his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass and celebration of life will be held at a later date. Condolences and cards may be shared by contacting Mackey Funeral Home.
