Obituary of Elmer George Babb
Elmer’s birth brought joy and a sense of purpose to a family struggling with the recent loss of husband and father, Elmer Ernest Babb (June, 1961). He was the much loved (dare I say favourite) child of Pat and adored baby brother to Elaine, Jim and Darcy. From babyhood he was a magnet for their love and attention and the glue that bound the little family together. As a student, he followed in the footsteps of his brother Jim (died 1970) and barely tolerated school with a strong preference for recess and physical education. Baseball, hockey and swimming were his sports.
After high school he worked at several jobs including CN in the Northwest Territories. He left that job and returned to Alberta, specifically Edmonton, when needed by his family. He was a companion and support to his brother Darcy, who was being treated for lung cancer, shuttling him between the University of Alberta hospital and Cross Cancer Institute for weeks. His help and quiet presence made the process more bearable for Darcy (died 1981), and the rest of our family. His next move was a return to Hanna where he continued to be a key part of our mother’s life as she aged, left her home, relocated to the Hanna lodge and eventually extended care (died 2006). He worked at the Sherness mine until his recent retirement in November 2024. He travelled extensively, played hockey in the winter and golfed in the summer, frequently visiting Edmonton to share life in general and special occasions with Elaine, Garth, Seth, Erin and, eventually Odin. He was a good friend and neighbour to many, assisting in projects whether in town or on a farm.
Elmer’s extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins was an important part of his life. He made time to visit his aunts and uncles and to support the endeavours of the youngsters. He not only attended these events but made sure to purchase every 50/50 and raffle ticket available. The occasional win was immediately re-donated to the team. He followed the same procedure with children of his friends. The week of his death, he visited Uncle Tom Spence in Brooks who had recently celebrated his 98th birthday.
He spent time at home in Hanna with his friends. Their activities generally revolved around either golf or hockey (actually playing or viewing on TV). The procedure was similar for all and involved preparation, completion of said activity followed by a period of recovery, restoration and relaxation. These people were dear to Elmer and enriched his life.
He is survived by sister Elaine, brother-in-law Garth, nephew Seth (Megan), niece Erin, great niece Sarai, great nephews Odin and Spence, his uncle Tom Spence, many cousins, their children and grandchildren, numerous friends, hockey mates and golf buddies.
Elmer’s practical and frugal nature would undoubtedly consider a donation to STARS as a fitting tribute. His humble side would probably suggest no tribute necessary including any celebration of his life.
Celebrate his life at the Hanna Golf Club on June 14, 2025 – begins with lunch at 2:00
