Doug Milander of Fredericton died in
hospital, with his wife at his side, on July 15 following a period of
failing health due to esophageal cancer, Parkinson’s and
diabetes.
Born in Norfolk, Nebraska, on May 11,
1947, to the late David and Enid (Presser) Milander, Doug earned a
journalism degree from the University of Nebraska in 1969 and was
immediately drafted to serve in the US army during the Vietnam War.
Instead, with his first wife, Mary E. (Johnson) Milander, he headed
for Canada. Doug, who worked as a weekly and daily newspaper reporter
and editor in Manitoba and New Brunswick, became a proud Canadian
citizen and never regretted his principled decision to oppose the
war.
He retired from CBC New Brunswick in
2005 after many years as a radio reporter and news reader. He enjoyed
music, camping, discussing politics, and travelling in Europe, Asia,
North America and the Caribbean. He always followed the ups and downs
of the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team and the Toronto Blue Jays. A
kind and compassionate man, Doug served as a longtime greeter at
Christ Church Cathedral, went on three mission trips to Belize, helped
to sponsor a refugee family, volunteered at the community kitchen, and
for many years led the cathedral’s outreach program to help people in
need.
In addition to Ann M. Deveau, his
beloved wife of nearly 47 years, he is survived by his brother Delwyn
Milander and brother-in-law R. Mark Meyer of Buffalo, NY; a few
cousins in the American Midwest; his mother-in-law Betty Deveau (late
Edward); nephews Michael and Daniel Deveau and their mother Mary
Coffill Deveau (late Bob), all of Nova
Scotia.
There will be no visitation. Following
cremation, a memorial service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral
on Monday, July 21, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Geoffrey Hall
officiating. The service will be livestreamed on the
cathedral’s YouTube Channel, and a reception will follow in Cathedral
Memorial Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations
may be made to any charity supporting the hungry or the homeless.
Bishop’s Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Interment will take
place at a later date.
