With sadness, we announce the passing of Dorothy Joan
« Dot » (Milne) Barron, on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 in the
Wolfville Nursing Home, after a long battle with
Alzheimer’s. She was 94.
Dot was a daughter of
the late Laurie and Ruth (Greene) Milne of New Minas. She was born in
Kentville, on November 18, 1930.
Dot went to Kings
County Academy, « KCA », in Kentville. She always regretted
leaving school early and unfinished so when she was in her forties,
she studied and completed Grade 9, 10 and 11. Later in life, she took
classes at Acadia University.
Dot was a fabulous
seamstress and was renowned for creating beautiful
children’s clothing, including cowboy outfits complete with
fringes, bridesmaid and wedding dresses, and a wide variety of custom
curtains and other fabric creations.
In addition to her
remarkable sewing skills, Dot was deeply involved in her community.
She was a dedicated Cub leader in New Minas, a member of the National
Campers and Hikers Association for many years, and an active volunteer
with the Red Cross. As a faithful member of the St. Paul and St.
Stephen United Church, Kentville, Dot also served as a member of the
United Church Women’s Group and a Sunday school teacher,
inspiring and guiding many young hearts.
Her love for her
community extended to her volunteer work with the Apple Blossom
Festival, where she joyfully helped in the preparations and the
decorating of the float for the princesses for many
years.
Dot was also a huge
supporter of her husband, Ken Barron, in his position as Chairman of
the New Minas Village Commission.
She also worked at
several retail stores in New Minas over the years, Tower’s,
Bobleen’s Boutique and McDougall’s Drug Store,
where her warmth and caring nature made her a favorite among customers
and colleagues alike.
When they retired, Dot
and Ken spent several winters at their trailer in Lakelands,
Florida.
