It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald “Don/Donnie” Misener, on January 21, 2025. Born at the Halifax infirmary, NS on March 14, 1960, to Christine (Martin) and predeceased by our father Russell Misener; Donnie was a loving Father to Angelina (Mike) Allen. A much-loved Grandfather to Isaac, Gracie, Millie, and Archie. A Brother, Brother-in-law and Foster-Brother to Theresa (Bob) Rogers, Dianne (Paul) Aalders, Wilfred (Cheryl) Misener, Matthew (Pamela) Smith, An Uncle to Krista, Jamie, Jenny, Ashley, Dustin, Tia, Bobby, Carli and Jake.
Donnie’s world at an early age was filled with boxing, baseball, hockey, pool, and motorbikes. He also loved to play his acoustic guitar and particularly having a singalong with whoever wanted to join in. Today I was reminded by my niece that Free Falling by Tom Petty was one song he enjoyed with his daughter Angie and Ashley while driving to Elderbank to visit his mother. He loved Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jim Croce, and Van Morrison; and would often share his love of the old tunes online with friends.
Growing up in South Woodside he got to know a lot of friends that played a big part in his world and as time moved forward moving to Woodlawn there was one thing for certain you could take the boy out of Woodside but not Woodside out of the boy. He finally settled in Eastern Passage where he was married, and his beautiful daughter Angie was born. Donnie loved his girl with all his heart.
For many years Donnie’s world would be dedicated to his work as a welder. Donnie was a proud member of the Canadian Piping Trades Union Local 56 for over forty years. His career took a drastic turn on December 10th, 2006, after a massive stroke. He had to learn a new way of living and I thank all the friends and family that helped him with his journey. He was very close with his neighbors the Snow family, and they looked out for each other through the years. He was an incredibly resourceful brother when he wanted to be and could apply his skills to many difficult tasks. If you knew Donnie well, you would know he would give you the shirt off his back even if it was freezing rain, he showed this compassion in many ways.
He was my mentor in life growing up, and I always looked up to him for direction and support growing up. Moving forward I will put my hands together and ask for his guidance when in need; especially while watching a Toronto / Montreal game and learning the Maple Leaf’s won. Brother they may win the cup this year if you help!!
Donnie’s family would like to thank all who recognized the challenges he faced and helped in times of need and crisis. We would also like to thank Cindy McAllister and Thelma Snow for their part in looking after him even when he was not aware.
Cremation will take place and we will have a private celebration of life around the ponds that he helped build and fished on my mother’s property overlooking the Musquodoboit River in the early spring/summer.
