Obituary of Denise Marie Blackler
BLACKLER, Denise Maire, age 60 of Harrietsfield, Nova Scotia. February 8, 1964, to December 10, 2024, With tremendous heartache, the family announces the passing of our treasured Denise.
Born in Kentville, Nova Scotia, Denise was known for her kindness, warmheartedness, and her sweet soul. She had a gift for making everyone feel loved and included. She would do anything for anyone and always put others before herself. “Nocturnal Neecie” was one of her many nicknames as she was famous for staying up all hours of the night. She would often tell people to “call me whenever you need to talk day or night!”. You could always count on her to pick up the phone.
Her son Jake was her pride and joy. She loved him with all she had. Her biggest wish was for him to succeed and build himself a beautiful life. Denise also loved her “bonus daughter” Emilie, who she called “Little Emie”. It was well known that Denise loved ALL her friends and family fiercely.
Denise had been a fighter since the age of 18 when she was sadly a victim of a motorcycle accident that left her with life-long injuries. She had 29 surgeries in total from this accident. Even after going through so many hardships at such a young age, she continued to fight and stay strong. She always found a way to remain positive. Her positivity was always contagious to everyone around her.
Denise was a crafty lady and made many beautiful creations including knitted gifts, wreaths, and her famous shortbread and peanut butter cookies. She was known for her love of dolphins and gold jewelry. Her famous rings, necklaces, and the 14 gold hoops in her ears were her trademarks. You would never see her leave the house without them.
In the summer you could find Denise down at Crystal Crescent beach, listening to the sounds of waves crashing on the shore with her 70s-90s music playing in the background. She cherished her days at the beach and loved to watch the sunset over the horizon. For many years she was the face of the Workers Compensation Board, working at the front desk. She made many close friends and met lots of lovely people during this time. People would often come by and ask for Denise, just so they could have the pleasure of speaking with her again. She had a strong work ethic and a large drive to help others.
Denise became very ill in May 2023 and fought very hard up until the very end. The family would like to express their gratitude to her lifelong best friend Bernadette Mountain Boyd for her continuous love and unwavering support. She stood by her side through the good times and the bad, including when both Denise and her father became so ill this past year. Bernie, you are a true angel on earth. Our family loves and appreciates you very much.
Denise may be gone but she will never be forgotten. She left her mark on everyone she knew, and her soul will live on in the waves and the sunsets. We have no doubt that she is relaxing in the sand somewhere right now, looking down on all her loved ones, proud to have known such beautiful people. We are all very proud to have known someone as wonderful as her.
Denise was predeceased by her mother, Barbara Arsenault (03/04/23), and her father, Albert Arsenault (11/11/24). She is survived by her son, Jacob (Emilie); sisters Monique and Colette (Jim); brother Trevor (Angie); and nieces and nephews Katelyn, Jorden, and Oliver.
Arrangements and cremation have taken place under the care of J Albert Walker Funeral Home, Halifax. In keeping with Denise’s wishes there will be a visitation on Friday, January 10, 2025, from 7-9 PM at City Church, 276 Herring Cove Road, Halifax. A funeral service will also be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 1 PM at City Church, followed by a small reception will be held at the church. A burial will take place at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Sackville. NS
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
