It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Bernice O’Reilly on January 20, 2025, at the age of 96, with a spirit that was forever young.
Bernice was the beloved wife of the late Jack O’Reilly (2021), with whom she celebrated 71 wonderful years of marriage. She was a devoted mother to Molly Poirier (Pierre) and Patti Lumsden (Paul Forbes, 2015). She was lovingly known as “Ging-Ging” to her grandchildren, and many others affectionately took to calling her by the same moniker. Ging-Ging had a special relationship with, and always took a special interest in her grandchildren, Jocelyne Poirier (Jim Tjiachris), Rachelle Poirier (Ryan Elmslie), and Chantal Poirier (John Gibson). She was a fun and loving Great-Ging-Ging to Ella and Oona Elmslie, Zachary and Xander Tjiachris, and Scout Molly Poirier Gibson, by whom she will be forever missed but fondly remembered.
Bernice was fortunate to have lived a vibrant and fulfilling life. Together with her husband Jack, they ran Pierre’s Baguette Bakery for many years. They loved spending their winters in Florida where they forged many special friendships. She cherished all family gatherings and never turned down an invitation to get out and have some fun. Her eyes would light up at the mention of a visit to the Casino. She especially enjoyed milkshakes, maple syrup, cheering on her favorite Detroit sports teams, and always celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with enthusiasm.
She was predeceased by her parents, Josephine and Norton Lyster, brother Noel Lyster, sisters June Rossoni (Norm) and Barbara Orlandi (Victor), in-laws Ida and Cecil (Helen), brother-in-law Pat O’Reilly, sister-in-law Mary O’Reilly. Survived by sisters-in-law Sharon Hoffman (late Jim), Sister Colleen O’Reilly, Sister Maureen O’Reilly, as well as her nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Vincent Ruisi for his exceptional care, and to all the Palliative Caregivers at HDGH for their compassion and support during Bernice’s final days.
Admired for her elegance, grace, boundless energy and strength, Bernice will be remembered most for the love and joy she brought to those around her. Her memory will forever be cherished by those who were blessed to know and love her. She is now reunited with the love of her life, Jack, and family members who passed before her.
A private funeral mass was held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church followed by interment at Assumption Cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Father Greg Bonin for officiating, and for his kindness, comfort and compassion. If you so desire, donations in Bernice’s honour may be made to the John McGivney Children’s Centre or Family Respite Services Windsor-Es.
