Barry L Chapman passed away Friday February 21, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Dad was born in Saskatoon to Helen and Fred Chapman on May 17,1939.
He attended Bedford Road Collegiate and the University of Saskatchewan, graduating with a BA and BEd. Dad taught at both Grosvenor School and Greystone Heights School where he was also Vice Principal. Barry transitioned in 1967 to the family business, Saskatoon Business College, working along side his mother Helen. He enjoyed a long fulfilling career at SBC during which time he taught classes and assisted thousands of graduates in job placement. Barry also worked with both his sons in the business for ten years and retired in 2003.
Barry is survived by his wife, Joan of 62 years, sons Rich (Andrea) granddaughters Avery, Dillon Kostiuk (Tanner) Kayce, Blair (Tara) daughter Ella, daughters Sidney and Meghan Donauer (Nate) and two great grandchildren. He also leaves to mourn the families of Brenda Gaze, Murray Smith and Bob and Marie Korpan.
Barry had a great zest for life and curious mind…always taking time to ask people questions and keeping in touch with long time friends. Barry was a ferocious reader…often found immersed in Giller Prize winner book. He was President of Saskatoon Club, board member of the Saskatoon Board of Trade and Chamber of Commerce. He was a strong advocate for the career college sector, serving on the board of the National Association of Career Colleges (NACC) for many years. Barry received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for service to NACC.
Waskesiu was a second home to Barry and Joan. Prince Albert National Park ran deep in Dad’s veins having spent 84 summers in the park. He was a lifeguard and met his future wife on the breakwater. There was no finer a day for Dad than portaging into Kingsmere lake or taking friends or family for a boat ride.
Dad enjoyed golfing at Riverside where he was a member for 25 years. He was adventurous and travelled to 75 countries in his life. Many trips were planned around scuba diving, fishing, golfing or skiing. He even took his sons and granddaughter to Whistler at 77 years young. Later in retirement, Barry and Joan spent fun filled winters in Kona Hawaii hosting family and friends.
Dad battled Myeloma for many years, never complaining and being very courageous in his last few years of declining health. He will be dearly missed by his family and we take comfort in knowing Dad is at peace. Thank you to the staff at RUH 6100 who cared for dad the last month of his life. A sincere thank you to Dr. Bosch (oncologist) along with Dr. Sundaran and all the staff at the Saskatoon Cancer Centre. Dad would often comment « they treat me like royalty. »
A Life Celebration is being planned to take place this spring or summer and will be announced in advance.
