Anne (Anka) Mirkovich
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Anne (Anka) Mirkovich (nee Bogdanovic) announce her passing on April 19th after a lengthy illness, at the age of 86. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 65 years, Peter, her children Michael (Carly), Nadine (Andrew), and Elaine; her grandchildren, Alexandra, Michael, Rachael, Victoria, Faith, Matthew, and Diana, as well as her many extended family members and her beloved friends. Anne is predeceased by her parents Mileva and Mihailo Bogdanovic, and her brothers, Nikola and Milorad.
Anne was born in Schumacher, Ontario, and spent her childhood in Niagara Falls. She was employed for many years by the Niagara South Board of Education, at A. N. Myer Secondary School where she was fondly known to students as ‘Mrs. Mirk’. Her friendly nature and compassion made her a trusted adult in the lives of many children, and a soft shoulder. She was a founding member of the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church community and was always comforted by, and true to her strong faith. Upon her retirement, she turned her attention to travel. She and Peter globe-trotted for many years, and she gained a wealth of experience and understanding of the world as she explored its far corners. She returned home from each trip with tales of new friends made, interesting excursions and sights seen, always excited to plan the next adventure. She loved to learn about new cultures and customs and to sample the cuisine of faraway places; she found great enjoyment in experiencing all the world has to offer.
Anne’s generous nature led to her volunteer work with immigrants and refugees, helping to furnish apartments and offering her time to support new Canadians as they established themselves in a new environment. She hosted many family members for months at a time as they began their lives in Canada. Her home was known as a comforting haven to all. Her most cherished role was that of ‘Baba’. Her love of her grandchildren was all-encompassing and her seven grandchildren have many treasured memories of time spent exploring with Baba and Deda, and being welcomed into their warm, happy home for sleepovers and fun. She was proud of their many accomplishments and was an endlessly encouraging, supportive presence in their lives. She loved them with her whole heart.
Anne’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the health-care professionals involved in her care over the past several years, particularly her wonderful PSWs who became like family over the years. The family will receive friends at Morse and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 22nd between 4pm and 8pm. A funeral service will be held at St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, Niagara Falls on Wednesday, April 23rd, at 11am, followed by interment at Lundy’s Lane Cemetery and a reception at St. George Serbian Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Parkinson Canada (www.parkinson.ca/) or St. George Serbian Orthodox Church.
