Dorey, Allen Lewis
(“Al,” “Dad,” “Spirit,” “Mr. Al,” “Grandpa Al,” “Santa”)
May 2, 1947 – January 17, 2025
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness, yet a measure of comfort, that we share the passing of our beloved Al. After facing a challenging few months and a very recent diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, Al left this world peacefully in his sleep, with his son by his side.
Al was born in Halifax, NS, as the second of the seven children of the late Dorothy (Dot) and Edmund (Ted) Dorey of Head of St. Margaret’s Bay, NS.
Al is now reunited with his beloved soulmate, Cammie “Flower” (Duckwall-Wall), his parents, his brothers Stephen Dorey (Martha) and Thomas Dorey, and his special puppy, Karma.
Leaving behind a huge legacy of love and cherished memories, he is survived by:
His siblings: Margaret Anne Johnson, Elizabeth Dorey, Robin Dorey (Kathy), and Rebecca Dorey.
His son: Travis Dorey (Leanne).
His stepchildren: Joan MacNeil, Joe Wall (Carolyn Nearing), Katie Wall (Paul Graham), Mandy Markie (Billy Pashkoski), and Tamie Markie.
His cousins: Byron Dorey and Barbara Judge.
His nieces and nephews: Suzanne Dorey, Stephanie Wells, Andrew Johnson, Erin Steves, Laurie Dorey, Garrett Dorey, Rhys Dorey, Dylan Bednar, Emma Bednar, and Thaine Bednar.
His grandchildren: Kyla MacNeil (Andre Bourque), Connor MacNeil (Lauren Basden), Aidan MacNeil, Erin MacNeil, Keigan MacNeil (Danielle Charette), Payton MacMillan (Aaron Samson), Isaiah Dorey, Heather Wall (Michah MacLean), Megan Wall, Eric Wall, Mikelle Graham, Brooke-Lynne Davis, Carter Davis, Gemma Solomon, and Kelci Markie-Shatford.
His great-grandchild: Adonis Brooks.
Al’s life was one of adventure, resilience, and boundless love. He embraced life to its fullest, collecting moments and stories that ranged from wild to heartwarming. He was a poet at heart, often finding inspiration for his writings while strolling through the Public Gardens or sitting by his special tree. He loved to dance like no one was watching, revel in good rock and roll (always at volume!), skydive (142 successful jumps!), chase tornadoes, fish, and he delighted in a good game of crib.
As an avid sports and dance enthusiast, Al traveled near and far to support and cheer on those he loved. He was a lifelong Montreal Canadiens fan and weathered countless heartbreaks, but he still managed to find humor in their defeats, proudly displaying his upside-down ‘Habs’ jersey in his window year after year.
Al’s journey of sobriety spanned 47 years, and was a testament to his strength as well as the unwavering support and fellowship of AA.
“Sapper” Dorey served his country proudly as a Canadian Army Engineer, with a posting in Germany during the 1960s. Upon his honorable discharge, Al returned to Halifax, working a variety of jobs, including many years with Sears home delivery and equally many years doing night shifts delivering the Chronicle Herald across Lower Sackville and Fall River.
However, Al found his true calling as the beloved Crossing Guard at Cavalier Drive School, where he spent 20 years ensuring the safety of “his kids.” He had a special gift for connecting with people, learning every child’s, parent’s, and pet’s name, and greeting them with high-fives, fist bumps, hugs, or simply a smile, always respecting their comfort. His care and dedication touched the lives of so many in the community.
A Celebration of Life for Al will take place on Saturday, January 25, 2025, from 2–4 PM at TK Barnard Funeral Home, 85 Sackville Cross Road, Lower Sackville, NS. A private family interment will follow in the spring.
True to Al’s spirit, and per his wishes, this will be an informal drop-in gathering. Guests are encouraged to share stories and memories if they feel moved, but there will be no formal service.
We invite everyone to come as they are — wearing bright colors, awesome band T-shirts, sports jerseys, or whatever feels true to your relationship with Al. Let’s honor his vibrant life by being ourselves, just as he would want.
In lieu of flowers, our family requests donations to the Cavalier Drive School breakfast program, Soul’s Harbour Rescue Mission, or simply paying forward Al’s kindness — smile at strangers, show love and compassion, and make someone’s day a little brighter.
Al, thank you for filling our lives with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories, and thank you to all who were part of his beautiful journey
