Alice « Madge » Maxwell
June 28, 1923
– January 15, 2025
It is with great
sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Alice
« Madge » Maxwell on January 15, 2025, at the age of 101 in
Grand View Manor, Berwick. Madge was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia to
Floretta and Lawson Vaughan. Madge was the last surviving member of
her immediate family, setting the age record.
Mum attended Success
Business College in Truro and went to work at the Nova Scotia
Agricultural College as the executive assistant to the principal. From
there she worked at Province House in Halifax for the Deputy Minister
of Agriculture and the Premier. While in Halifax, Mum met our father,
Ian Maxwell, was married and they moved to Kentville. She continued
her career at the Nova Scotia Sanatorium as an executive assistant to
Dr. Holden. Mum and Dad had four children, and she took time away to
see us through our high school years. Madge returned to work at Basel
Smith Seals and finished her career as Executive Assistant to Bob
Stead in the Admissions Office at Acadia University. Mum supported Dad
in the development of the family business, Hillcrest Development
Company, keeping the books, etc., until close to the time she entered
long term care.
Mum’s
greatest pride was her family. She held special spots in her heart for
her grandson, granddaughter and great-granddaughter. She made many
sacrifices throughout her life to make our lives better. She enjoyed
her life, but it was not without tragedy losing her son, Colin, at the
age of 29. We could not have asked for a more loving, caring mother,
and she will be greatly missed by us all. We are comforted in knowing
Mum is now at rest with our brother, our father and the rest of her
Vaughan family. Mum was predeceased by all the members of the Vaughan
family; her husband, Ian Maxwell and son, Colin Maxwell. She is
survived by her daughter, Cathy, Kentville; sons, Richard (Loretta),
Kentville and John, Bloomington, Indiana, USA. Also, she is remembered
by grandson, Ian (Amber) Black River Lake; granddaughter, Lauren,
Halifax and great-granddaughter, Chloe Maxwell, (Black River
Lake).
Special thanks to the
staff at Grandview Manor, especially those on Ross Unit. Mum was a
resident for 10 years and would not have reached this exceptional age
without all of you! Mum also had some special caregivers over those 10
years (besides the regular staff) especially Cynthia, Crystal and
Dallas. Many thanks for the time, attention and love you gave to our
Mum.
A celebration of life
will be held in the White Family Funeral Home on Thursday, February 6,
2025, at 11:00 a.m. Cremation has occurred and there will be no
visitation. Family flowers only. Donations can be made to Grand View
Manor in Berwick or a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements
have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation
Services, Kentville.
