With sadness, we announce the death of our beloved José, dear husband, father and grandfather, retired physician and international advocate of rehabilitation medicine.
José, who reached the age of 100 on Aug. 27, 2025, died at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto on Oct. 18, surrounded by family and caregivers.
He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Madrid in 1950, moved to New York City, and then to Edmonton, Alberta, where he practised at the University of Alberta Hospital. After a brief period at Queen’s University, he moved to Toronto and joined Mount Sinai Hospital and the University of Toronto; he served many years as Physiatrist-in-Chief at Mount Sinai until 1991.
José’s passion for rehabilitation medicine was realized through his active involvement in and devotion to the international rehabilitation society. He served as President of the Canadian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and in 1988 was elected Secretary of the Congress of the International Federation for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He was part of a task force to amalgamate the specialized field’s two organizations in 1999 and later became historian of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine.
José was proud to receive the recognition from the King of Spain, Juan Carlos I Civil Merit Decoration, and the Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal, for his work in rehabilitation medicine, among many other awards and recognitions.
In addition to his remarkable career, José was a devoted family man, a prodigious reader with a photographic memory, who delighted in sharing his views about everything from the current Canadian political landscape to the Golden age of Spanish literature.
José leaves behind his loving wife, Jacqueline Jiménez, children Amalia (Sam Cohen), Marina (John Geiger), Nicolas (Christa Sanders), Simon (Mandy Guttman), his nine grandchildren, his amazingly considerate and loving family in Spain and Australia and his friends and caregivers. We would like to especially thank the many medical professionals who looked after him with such attention. We will miss José’s sardonic wit and his passionately held views on just about everything. His memory will be our blessing.
A Funeral Mass and reception will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday Oct. 29 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 24 Cheritan Ave, Toronto.
