With loving hearts, we sadly announce the peaceful passing of William Frederick “Fred” Cranford on Monday, September 5th, 2023, just a month shy of his 87th birthday.
Predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Theresa (Clarke) Cranford, his mother Edith Newhook, father Clarence Cranford, brother Clifford, sisters, Joan and Rosanna.
Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, his sons Fred Cranford (Claudine), Michael Cranford (Karen), his daughter, Elizabeth Edmunds (Robert); 10 precious grandchildren, Lisa (Adam), Melanie (Steven), Geoffrey (Josphine), Chelsea (Martin), Jordan (Kalene) Kimberlyn (John), Jeremy (Amy), Katie (Alex), Jesse (Emilee), Suzie (Dawson), his brother Clarence Jr, sisters Betty, Norma, Patsy, and Judy, nieces, nephews and a large circle of other relatives and friends.
Fred enjoyed his life to the fullest. His bright smile and genuine kindness defined the person that he was. His smile, warm heart, and laughter was so welcoming and incredibly infectious. Fred was born in New Harbour in 1936 before he relocated to St John’s. He began as a Foreman at Hickman Motors Garage on Water street, St. John’s, where he later built, owned, and ran his own business, called Cranford’s Autobody on Empire Avenue. Retiring at age 40, Fred and his family relocated to Roaches Line, where he lived the remainder of his life.
He was a lover of antique cars and motorcycles, especially his Harley Davidson which he proudly rode until he could no longer. His love for the open road was matched by the love for his family. Much like a Harley, he was reliable, dependable and always fun. In addition to his love for motorcycles, he was an animal lover. He spent many mornings feeding the robins and blue jays on his patio in Roaches Line, as well as any rabbits, cats, or dogs that showed up to his home.
Fred was the definition of a great man. As a son, brother, husband, father, poppy, uncle, cousin, and friend, he was dearly loved. He lived an exceptional life, sharing ever-lasting love with anyone in his path, especially the ultimate love of his life, Mary. He was surrounded by family and friends his entire life. He will be greatly missed by anyone who has known him. However, his legacy will live on forever.
Fred’s family would like to send out their utmost appreciation to all the medical staff who have helped Fred throughout his journey. Their generosity will forever be remembered. A special thank you is in order for the nurses and social workers at the Carbonear hospital who ensured he received the best possible care and supported his family during this difficult time.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Broughton’s Funeral Home. Cremation to take place, no wake or funeral to follow. As per his request, his ashes will be buried at All Hallows Cemetery at a later date. His final ride to his resting place will be on his Harley Davidson Motorcycle as he wouldn’t have it any other way.
In lieu of flowers, please consider doing a good deed for a loved one, as Fred did many for those around him.
