William Dennis «Din» Marsh Obituary
Dennis “Din” Marsh
Mill Creek
It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of our dear father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, William Dennis “Din” Marsh on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in North Sydney on April 12, 1931, he was the son of the late John Willie and Elsie (Devoe) Marsh. Din grew up and lived his entire life in Mill Creek where he was well known to his neighbors.
Din also known as Dad, Grampy, and Uncle Din married the love of his life Mary Johnstone on May 9th, 1955. He and “Mary Din” as everyone called her, lived in Mill Creek where they raised their family of seven children. They were well known on the Northside for their volunteer work and involvement in the church and community. It was a true honor and surprise when they were recognized as Maritimers of the Week by ATV Television. They were also presented with a plaque from the Florence Volunteer Fire Department as a thank you in recognition of inviting the firefighters and Santa into their home for a hot meal for fifty years as Santa made his annual Christmas Community visits. Having their cottage in Ross Ferry for many years they were also close to the Ross Ferry Volunteer Firefighters and their spouses inviting them to a fish and chip dinner prepared at their cottage in Ross Ferry.
Din started working in the mine at a very early age and hard work was no stranger to him. He was a great storyteller and would often talk about the old days and how it was not easy. He was a true gentleman who helped many people over the years because that was just the type of man our dad was. He taught all of us including his grandchildren the importance of hard work and lending a helping hand. After 5 years working in the mine, he left to drive Taxi and eventually became a school bus driver, a career that lasted 40 years and three generations of students. Din and Mary worked side by side in their business endeavors their whole life. They operated a convenience store in Mill Creek and ran the Texaco Lakeview Restaurant in Bras d’Or for many years. After leaving the restaurant, he co-owned and operated C.B. Hoare Auto Parts in North Sydney. Eventually, that would become a business that he would share with his sons David and Harold. He was a member of the Rotary Club of North Sydney, and both he and Mary volunteered much time and energy to promote the organization. Din was made Paul Harris Fellow, a recognition named after the founder of Rotary. He was also a member of the former St. Joseph’s Men’s Club, an Honorary member of the former Bras d’Or Florence and area Kinsmen Club, The IWK Founders Club, and a past board member of NEDAC.
Din and Mary loved to travel making numerous trips across Canada and the United States over the years. Their final years of traveling were enjoyed while sharing them with lifelong friends Mick and Nettie. He played and coached baseball in his younger years and was an avid Toronto Blue Jays fan. He enjoyed a good game of cards over the years with Mick and Nettie and family and friends will remember him fondly for the beautiful quilts that were made by him and Mary, and some on his own after Mary’s death in 2014.
Dad enjoyed planting and looking after his vegetable garden every year, but he enjoyed giving the vegetables away even more. He enjoyed making preserves and teaching others how to do it made him so proud. He loved driving his tractor whether it was in the garden, mowing the lawn, or cleaning up after a snowfall. Family meant the world to Din, and he was very proud of the work ethic he instilled in all of us and our families. Up until his passing he would ask questions and ensure that everyone was okay.
Left to mourn his passing and honor his legacy are his children, David (Anne), Bruce (Maureen), Louise (Cavel) Rahey, Natalie, Harold (MaryAnn), and Janet (Darren) Vickers; niece Irene (Ron) Howley whom he considered another daughter; grandchildren Davida (Jason) Pyett, Ryan Marsh, Jennifer Marsh (Matthew), Kathryn (Mark) Hall, Allan (Paige) Marsh, Adam (Dylan), Drew, and Malik Rahey, William Marsh King, Emily, Andrew and Mary Claire Marsh, Juliana, Bradley and Joshua Vickers, and ten great-grandchildren and another one on the way. Also surviving are brothers Cyril (Marie) and Elmer, sisters Connie Zammit and Joan (David) Fraser, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Mary, his son Alan, and his sister Elizabeth (Len Vickers, Gerald Cantwell).
“A loving father, tender and kind, what a beautiful memory you left behind.”
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Thursday July 4th at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 pm on Friday, July 5th at St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or with Father Bedford Doucette presiding. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery with a reception to follow in the parish hall on Villa Drive.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Parish Cemetery Fund, the IWK Foundation, or a charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
